About this deal

The initial versions of the USB standard specified connectors that were easy to use and that would have acceptable life spans; revisions of the standard added smaller connectors useful for compact portable devices. Higher-speed development of the USB standard gave rise to another family of connectors to permit additional data paths. All versions of USB specify cable properties; version 3. x cables include additional data paths. The USB standard included power supply to peripheral devices; modern versions of the standard extend the power delivery limits for battery charging and devices requiring up to 240 watts. USB has been selected as the standard charging format for many mobile phones, reducing the proliferation of proprietary chargers. Cable manufacturers offer special cables with two brown (live wire) cables instead of individual brown and blue colours. This is available in 1mm and 1.5mm two core and earth (or twin and earth) sizes which are commonly used in UK light circuits. a b "USB 2.0 Specification Engineering Change Notice (ECN) #1: Mini-B connector" (PDF). The intent is to permit uniformly charging laptops, tablets, USB-powered disks and similarly higher-power consumer electronics, as a natural extension of existing European and Chinese mobile telephone charging standards. This may also affect the way electric power used for small devices is transmitted and used in both residential and public buildings. [61] [62] The standard is designed to coexist with the previous USB Battery Charging specification. [63]

The main reason for the UK wire colour change on the 1st of April 2006 was to ensure that electrical wire colours across the UK and all European countries matched so that the live was brown, neutral was blue and earth would be green/yellow or bare.In the US there are 2 different types of AC electrical system that can be encountered, a low voltage system (120 – 240 volts) and a high voltage system (277 – 480 volts):

The red and white cables are for audio (right and left channels), and the yellow cable is for video. ( Read more…) Revision 1.2 of the specification was released in 2010. It made several changes, and increased limits including allowing 1.5A on charging downstream ports for unconfigured devices—allowing High Speed communication while having a current up to 1.5A. Also, support was removed for charging port detection via resistive mechanisms. Some USB devices require more power than is permitted by the specifications for a single port. This is common for external hard and optical disc drives, and generally for devices with motors or lamps. Such devices can use an external power supply, which is allowed by the standard, or use a dual-input USB cable, one input of which is for power and data transfer, the other solely for power, which makes the device a non-standard USB device. Some USB ports and external hubs can, in practice, supply more power to USB devices than required by the specification but a standard-compliant device may not depend on this.

As the new rules regarding wire colour that were introduced in 2006 were only for new installations and not existing then this ultimately leads to the fact that some homes will have cables with both old and new wire colours. The last change in UK wire colours occurred on the 31st of March 2006 and this meant after this date any electrical cables used in new fixed installations had to feature wire colours of brown live and blue neutral. It sounds rather complicated, but in reality, it’s a matter of buying the right adapters and plugging everything in. Very simple.
