About this deal

There are insults made in anger among family members -- words such as "mule" and "crazy" -- and there are references to "Polacks" on a news flash. Rachel’s revelations later on about how Talia was protecting her older sister and not the other way around, speak to the development of characters. And I think it has a very rich message, both for people who are not from England as well as people who have grown up here and lived here their entire lives.

That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. I find myself comparing it to books like Wonder - one which I did feel was a touch too young for me - and I think an older audience will appreciate the brutal honesty of this story. The plot was somewhat scattered and none of the characters were developed enough for me to love them. Shreve makes note at the start of the book that the court testimony is taken verbatim from court documents during the murder trial. One of the messages I took from The Weight of Water is that whatever country we come form we are all the same, and that we should try and help not hinder each other. Shreve alternates sections of this letter, which describes what led up to the murders and what happened on the night they occurred, with the main structure of the book which moves fluidly between the interactions among the family of the photographer and the details of the history of the murder as it was revealed in the trial. The diary gives you a real feel for Maren as an individual and especially what life must have been like for a lonely, foreign fisherman's wife on such a desolate island.

I adored One, also written by Crossan in a freeverse format, but this just felt very two dimensional and boring. The murdered women were her older sister Karen Christensen and Anethe Christensen, their sister-in-law. Describing the scenery, it seems so relaxing and the buildings , it just makes you want to know , who, what and when. I enjoyed this book very much, but most of her others, notably "The Pilot's Wife" (gee, how could the reader miss that little plot "surpirse"? Along the way, she starts at a new high school and runs into a group of nasty students in her year group. The book is well-written, with effective pacing and moving detail, but the writing is not, in the end, remarkable. Crossan portrays the refuge that children (and adults, often enough) seek in a hobby or singular activity, something they can focus on—something they can control. Good story, it was a little annoying that every chapter ended on a cliffhanger or a character about to reveal something and then the next chapter starts somewhere else or the character ruminating on what she’s learned but leaving the reader in the dark. It is a new perspective of how people find new countries and homes difficult to deal with and how their emotions change.

This story intertwined with the story of the photographer, Jean, her husband, Edward, and their daughter, Billie (Willemenia). The Weight of Water gives us an insight of the life of Kasienka a Polish immigrant come to England to find her Father. Hoping to have a small vacation, they travel on a boat skippered by Thomas' brother Rich, who has brought along his girlfriend Adaline. The poems have a gentle lyricism and speak to immigration, identity, prejudice, discrimination, bullying, families and first love.I realized I was skimming pages, something I only do when I'm really bored with a story, so I checked what page I was on.
