About this deal

While Anna and Max are young enough to easily master a new language, their father – who had achieved immense prominence in the German language – has been struggling with work.

Judith Kerr has taken a very serious theme and found a way to explain things Anna faced in entertainment and nice to read way.The family knows that Hitler will use his new powers to harm them, and they decide to take the preemptory measure of leaving the country, of escaping immediately. To be poor, even desperate, in a cold, foggy country where the natives, though friendly, gargle some kind of Anglo-Saxon dialect…. Anna passes absolutely as an English born and bred young women – until of course she encounters officialdom and background checks. But what a loss of beautiful literature and her art to the world of her family hadn't fled in time to save their lives. She left Nazi Germany with her family in 1933 and fled across Europe, eventually settling in England.

The only thing that I din't like about this series is the huge time gap between books as it is a bit disorientating when you first start reading. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Others about WW2 usually are about fears of the Nazi's and Hitler, but Anna's concerns don't affect anything about the crisis in history. Kerr was born in Berlin but left Germany with her parents and her brother, Michael, in 1933, soon after the Nazis first came to power. When there was music on the radio in the lounge it seemed to her unbearably beautiful, and the sight of the dead men's clothes at work made her unbearably sad.

That first book, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit (Essential Modern Classics) , was definitely written for children close to 9 or 10 as a minimum age, though its upper age readership widens to include the not so young adult as well as the YA market, as the writing itself, and the viewpoint, though accessible, is deep enough to be experienced and enjoyed at whatever level of understanding the reader possesses.
