The narrative here is very strange. Truss is not only the author, but she seems to be the story-teller here - almost playing a defined role in the narrative of the book, pausing to tell the reader a thing or two, like an aside one might find in a Shakespeare play. It works in the theatre, but here...? In a 1950's mystery? Not so much. In some ways, it’s hard to put my feelings about this book into words. It was hard to read at times, with all the reality of two characters who have been rejected by the families that they grew up in and subsequently dealt with intense substance abuse. The topics this book looks at are handled with this incredibly genuine and heartfelt care, nuanced because they are in real life. Yes it is a romance and things do end well, but that doesn’t mean that the hard things should be glossed over, and this book never falls prey to the idyllic romance being more attractive than the harsh reality of the characters.

It is not possible to ever prove zero risk from any medical intervention. The data will always be limited. But we can demonstrate that the risk must be below certain upper limits, and that benefits outweigh risks – that net outcomes are improved with the intervention.Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. A police procedural that never disappoints, it is true to its period. In the process it pays tribute to a gentler time and world of entertainment was variety shows and provincial theatre. The laughs are never at the expend of these gentler times rather it is character driven, the result is an authentic murder mystery. The author has a good ear for language and the experience to write with confidence and maximise human frailties and shortcomings to enrich her story. Because the point was this: Steine loved the law, but he found the entire concept of criminals morally repugnant. When he adopted the famous far-away expression he was not (as all supposed) thinking deeply: he was strenuously attempting to place himself in a calm green place beside a tinkling stream, with kingfishers flashing overhead and a snatch of Elgar on the breeze. It suited him perfectly to believe that, in a single afternoon, all the serious criminals in Brighton had killed each other, leaving the town crime-free for ever. Policing for him was about upholding the law and protecting the public, not dealing with unprincipled louts who would shoot you as soon as look at you.
