I am in the looking to replace my WD Red 3TB drives with WD Red Plus 6TB drives (making sure CMR tech is used). Now i noticed that a new WD Red Plus line has entered the market in 2021, namely the EFZX series with 128mb cache instead of 64mb cache currently used by the EFRX series.
OS: Windows 10 Pro 1909 64-bit / FreeNAS 11.3-U2 (note, the latest is FreeNAS 11.3-U3.1 but it was released well after we started the project) Switching our focus from peak latency to latency consistency in our standard deviation test, the 1TB 2.5″ Red and previous-generation 3TB 3.5″ Red slightly edged out the other models under more stressful conditions. And upon further investigation I found out that these disks are SMR. I filed a support request with Seagate.
At this point in the benchmarks, we are coming to expect performance better than the Seagate NAS and smaller Red drives, which is what we find with the web server standard deviation benchmark. I have run an *extended* S.M.A.R.T. test on all six drives (the one that takes ~200 minues,) and they don't show any errors - and the synology box has continued building the RAID and is not showing it in a bad state. Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are tested for compatibility and optimum performance. Write tests tell a mostly similar story. As an individual drive, the WD40EFAX is performing pretty well in these benchmarks. I've read of a number of people who got Red Plus drives as replacements (Red Plus is what Red used to be, definitely not SMR).
Someone said this is part of a RACE for BIGGER capacities. It can be… BUT, before that happens, WD is probably using the most demanding customers / environments to TEST SMR tech so they can DEPLOY them in the bigger capacity DRIVES: 8, 10, 12, 14TB and beyond (do not currently exist). As you can see, with a heavy write workload immediately preceding the CDM test, the SMR drive was notably slower. In some ways, this is like timing a runner’s sprint time after running a marathon. One could argue that you may not transfer 125GB files every day, but that is less data than the video production folder for this article’s companion video we linked at the start. Still, this is a good indicator of the drive working through its internal data management processes and impacting performance. These targeted tests are not designed to be comprehensive, but instead, illuminate any obvious differences between the SMR drive and its CMR competitors.We are going to start with some general benchmarks to try and place the WD Red (WD40EFAX) performance in a larger context.
