About this deal

Note that the night captures have the orange-ish tinge featured by many sensors, but they still reveal quite a lot of detail. Headlight flare is minimal. Some of flare in the image above is due my less-than-stellar cleaning of my windshield. My bad. You’ll have to miss out on the odd feature here and there – there’s no onboard GPS or speed recording – but you still get voice commands, a parking guard feature and the same vault features as the Dash Cam 47. What’s more, there’s little between the two dash cams when it comes to video quality. In brightly sunlit or dull conditions it’s excellent, and pretty clear and blur-free at night, although the Dash Cam 47 seems slightly better at dealing with windscreen reflections and glare.

Yes, absolutely. Some drivers might not like the idea of a camera constantly monitoring their vehicle, but some models of dash cam (like the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2) are compact and subtle enough to almost disappear behind the central rear view mirror. In other words, once they are up and running you soon forget about them; they just sit there, quietly keeping an eye out, ready to save footage if you’re caught in an accident. It’s also worth pointing out that the specifications of the Nexar Pro are the same as the Nexar Beam, just without the added interior / cabin view camera. Unless you’ve got a particular desire to want to see what’s going on inside the car from your dash cam, you’ll save money by opting for the cheaper option. Key specs – Max video recording resolution: 1080p, 30fps; Field of view: 140°; Display: 2in; Extra features: GPS, accelerometer, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, voice control

The best dash cam features to consider:

Just like the Nexar Beam, the Nexar Pro GPS is primarily designed to simply record the scene in front of it, but it also comes with a cabin view camera in the box which you can choose to install or not. With it, you’ll also record what’s going on inside your vehicle, which could be useful for a number of different types of user. Aimed at those who spend extended periods behind the wheel, the Nexar Pro is a dual-cam solution that can record video both inside and outside a vehicle. Comprised of two separate camera units connected by a cable, we found the setup to be pretty neat, even if it took up a fair bit of screen real estate.

Beyond this, there are a fantastic set of features, including built-in GPS with logging of position and speed, time-lapse parking recording, and automatic detection and protection of impact events – East Devon’s superb collection of potholes gave me ample chance to try this out. For many of us, a three-camera setup won’t be worth the hassle, but if you want to protect your ability to drive for work, you won’t find a better bundle. If you want to continue to use CarPlay, the best solution seems to be to set it up and then from then on let the camera record automatically to the SD card, leaving your smartphone out of it. It’s not the most elegant solution, and hopefully one day there will be a way to use both at the same time.

Relatively compact for a dual-lens dash cam, the Vantrue N2 Pro records a detailed view of the road ahead and your vehicle’s interior. Designed with taxi drivers in mind, it forgoes many of the extras which your car is already likely to have, including speed camera alerts and collision warnings. There are also a wealth of features to consider, including a touchscreen display, a companion app, GPS, parking surveillance, voice control, sat nav and what3words to name but a few. It also uses image stabilisation to reduce the impact of vibrations for a smoother, clearer image. Throw in a new Extreme Weather Mode with defogging for misty and rainy days, and you won’t beat this dash cam for picture quality. Loop recording allows dash cams to continuously record video footage to their built-in storage or memory card. The setting automatically overwrites the oldest clips on your camera with new ones when its storage becomes full. This way, it can keep recording without requiring you to pull over and manually delete unneeded clips. This gives you the reassurance that there will be no gap in your driving log. Nexar guards your car even when you’re not next to it. In case of an impact, your dash cam will start recording automatically.
