About this deal

In the mouth: A tropical fruit salad with an intermission of French oak in the middle. Like on the nose, it’s initially tropical fruits. I get light and slightly lasting tastes of cantaloupe, pineapples, sapodilla, starfruit, Fuji apples, honey and dried apricots. There’s a sneaking, rising heat here too as I chew it. The French oak manifests in the form of mushrooms. Similar to the nose, I get subtle and brief tastes of dried shiitake mushrooms, chaga powder and leather. At the end are a subtle mix of more tropical fruit notes with something bitter. The bitterness makes me think of biting into a fresh coconut husk, as well as honeydew and different shades of orange. Conclusions: The whisky world has two of its most beloved bottles when it comes to 18-year-old single-malt Scotch whisky: The Glenlivet 18 and the Glenfiddich 18. Both of these have achieved great reputations and accolades, and many whisky drinkers consider them to be among some of the best in the world.

18 Years Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky - The Glenlivet UK

I found it to be pleasant - both to nose and its flavor bouquet - "fit for everyday use". It is competent sipped with or without a splash of water and being American - I often add a few cubes of ice, particularly in the summer. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. It’s complex with subtle flavours and incredibly well rounded. It’s like an old school, polite and friendly gentleman with exceptional manners.

This is good whisky, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s better than the 12 or the 15. The dominant European oak/ex-oloroso sherry cask influence just makes it that much more different from the 12 and 15. In the mouth: Like the nose, the red fruits and sherry flavors dominate. I get light tastes of cherry candy, chocolate, blood orange, dates, coffee, sultanas, caramelized orange peel oil and toasted chestnut. In between those are subtle flashes of sulfur. Conclusions: Balance, Complexity: Good balance of sweet and sour. The apple does seem to dominate on the nose while the lemon seems to dominate in the mouth. However, the two seem to balance out. But complex? Not really.

The flavors are just more pleasant, thus easier to enjoy. After the cask flavors run out, though, there’s a sudden stop. If you were to ask me my ranking of the three, I’d say 15 > 18 > 12. However Systemdown assured me that Nadurra was a good little whisky and he proved me correct with his sample of Nadurra and so when I saw the 18 year old Glenlivet I was a little intrigued. I have also enjoyed the oldest whiskies I tried of both the Balvenie ( Balvenie 17) and Glenfiddich ( Glenfiddich 18) range so I was optimistic for this one. Finish: this is where the whisky really shines. Cherries, dark chocolate and walnuts with nutmeg, cloves, oak and raisins lingering longer than expected. Very balanced. Ultimately both Glenmorangie 18 and Glenlivet 18 offer exceptional quality Scotch whiskies at reasonable prices that are sure to please any whisky connoisseur!

This has been part of my struggle: I very much use my own crazy system. I score a whisky in 5 categories out of 6.5 (being perfect). So the max a whisky can score in my book is 32.5I’ve sampled Glenlivet drams before, but this one caught my eye as I had some spare cash at the end of the month, and this looked like great value for the price! On the other hand Glenlivet 12 year old offers a lighter style than Glenmorangie 10, with distinct notes of citrus, honeycomb, sweet almond and subtle hints of smoke on the palate. Although Glenlivet 12 is slightly cheaper than Glenmorangie 10, it cannot compete with the latter in terms of complexity and richness.
