About this deal

With the Mini Wing 105, this design combined with its other features makes this the best dual rear mount we came across, though it does come with some caveats not often seen with XLAB hydration systems. Up and Down All of that aerodynamic efficiency isn’t just down to those beautifully sculpted frame tube profiles. It’s Cannondale’s clever approach to total integration that also helps to make the SuperSix EVO so good at slicing through the air; by engineering the frame, fork, handlebars, wheels and seat post as one holistic system Cannondale have been able to significantly lower drag. In another nod to aesthetics the designers have partnered up with MOMO Design in Italy to create an all-new one-piece integrated handlebar found on the Hi-Mod bikes, which not only looks stunning but is super-aero thanks to its thin aero profile. Frame – The frame is one of the few mounts to use both the cage and the contained types of hydration systems. Most of the frame mounted hydration systems are the cage type, but there are a few contained types to go along with them too. The frame has some distinct advantages over the other types with the main one being that it is far less likely to be damaged during a crash or fall than the other types.

Oh, and one significant aspect which Cannondale were keen to reinforce with us at launch is that the wheels and the new SuperSix EVO frame NO LONGER follow their previous AI Offset (Asymmetric Integration) principle which utilised an offset rear triangle and drivetrain. The offset shifted the rear hub and drivetrain 6mm to the right, with the benefits said to enable short chainstays and a rear wheel which was stiffer and stronger thanks to spoke tension and angles being equal on both sides. The downside of this principle? Wheelsets weren’t immediately interchangeable, with any after-market rear wheels having to be re-dished before they would fit in the frame. Cannondale have been slowly phasing out their AI principle as each new model of bike is launched and the new Gen 4 SuperSix EVO has joined the conventional rear wheel party.

It can also be mounted in a variety of arrangements, though this hydration does not come with a cage. Rear Hydration Systems In comparison with a 500mL standard bottle fixed on the downtube, you can have the following time gains over the length of an ironman distance: Rank

According to this study, an aero water bottle can save 1.6 to 3.9 Watts compared to a normal 500mL water bottle mounted on the downtube. However, the benefits are negligible below 19mph (30km/h). The true benefits only show if you ride at 25mph (40km/h) or above. Cannondale are calling the Gen 4 SuperSix EVO the ‘lightest fastest road bike available’, in a nod to its aero-efficiency and its extremely light weight. On top of that, a frame mounted hydration system is within easy reach for a cage type and is easier to refill for the contained type of hydration system. This type also suffers less destabilization than a rear mounted hydration system but more vibration that a front mounted hydration system. In comparison with a 500mL standard bottle fixed on the downtube, the power you have to produce when riding can be reduced. Let’s see a comparison of the watts saved by different solutions for hydration on the bike: Rank If you need more than one bottle - particularly on half-ironman courses and longer, you're likely going to be using it for a concentrated solution with a bunch of calories in it. Many top athletes like this solution. With your swappable BTA bottle up front for water or course drinks, you're best off using the downtube (or seat tube) bottle for a good 1,000 calorie or so mix. You take small sips from this every now and again, and a steady stream from your BTA bottle, which is easier to get to. Since you won't be swapping this bottle, it makes sense to make it as aero as possible, and that means one of several choices. Specialized, Arundel, Bontrager, and Profile Design all make good bottles, some of them integrate better with certain frames than others. If you have a Specialized bike, get the Specialized bottle and mount it on the downtube. If you have a Trek, get the Bontrager and mount it on the seat tube (it fits better there). The general rule is to put it where it better "completes" the shape of your bike without leaving gaps.Indeed, according to simulations by Swiss Side, a pure aero road bike with clincher or tubeless tyres may have been the fastest bike setup for Stage 11 of the 2021 Tour de France, which included two ascents of Mont Ventoux. The other issue is that this is a fairly heavy rear mount which will inherently increase your racing time. However, this is still the best budget rear mount that we saw with plenty of options. However You Want Rear – This is the original mounting position for bike fueling systems and is almost always a cage type of hydration system. This is mostly due to the fact that snaking a feeder tube along the entire length of the bike is not an efficient design.

Still, this is one of the lightest hydration systems that we saw regardless of the mounting position. Cage – This is a far simpler form of bike hydration system though it will inherently require more effort on your end to use. Basically, the cage type of triathlon fueling systems merely hold whatever receptacle in place but do not aid or assist the transfer of water in any way. This means that cage systems do not have a feeder tube or any other automatic method of distribution. However, this also means that the cage type of hydration systems are much easier to refill as you can just grab another bottle. One issue is that cage systems do not always hold the bottle securely and can allow it to topple out of the cage if you ride over rougher terrain. Mount

Carbon fiber is great for hydration cages because not only is it incredibly lightweight, but it is also incredibly strong for its weight. The primary benefit of a torpedo mounted hydration system is that you literally do not need to do anything to use it except put the extended feeder tube in your mouth. The issue with this mount is that you will need to take more time to refill it, and the feeder tube can either distract you or even leak its contents as your race. Let’s dig into the details. We will focus on the aerodynamic gains given by aero bottles but also by looking at different options for positioning the water bottles. We will see how much time you can gain and how many watts it can save. I will also review the regulations for triathlon and also for UCI road races about aero bottles. And finally, I will give you my honest opinion about buying aero bottles. How aerodynamic is a water bottle? For the two applications above, cage selection isn't critical - any decent cage will keep your bottles in place, because you aren't putting them on a rear-mounted bottle launcher. But if you really want a rear bottle, mount up a single one Chris Lieto style, right behind the saddle. You can do it with zip ties for the el cheapo solution (that's how Chris does it). But with a bottle behind the saddle, you'll want a good cage. The best cages have a solid lip that fits into the bottle's choke point. For bling factor, I like Arundel's Trident cages. They're pricey, but I've had a pair of them for six years, and they're still going strong. They've followed me from bike to bike. On the cheap, get a Specialized Rib Cage. They're fantastic. And if you're a Dash Saddles acolyte, they make the very snazzy TT9 with integrated cage bosses so you can skip the zip ties. The Cannondale HollowGram 50 R-SL wheelsets have been designed in combination with the SuperSix EVO’s chassis to further enhance aerodynamics.
