About this deal

Pretty satisfied with the set so far, but I would definitely like to figure out what's up with the vertical lines + framerate. Despite this prolific output – a total of more than thirty completed films over a half-century, of which twenty-six survive – Murphy’s work remains rarely seen and little championed. Boasting all-new 2K restorations from archival 16mm and 8mm elements, as well as a number of new digital captures from Murphy’s personal tape masters, this extensive retrospective of the obsessive auteur’s work is bolstered by a wealth of extra features, including surviving fragments from lost works, and a 120-page book, all of which provides the definitive account of the weird and wonderful worlds of Britain’s great unheralded DIY filmmaker. It's really, really unfortunate, but at the same time these films look miles better than they ever have, just judging by what can be found of them elsewhere. Over the next five decades, Murphy would go on to make many more films across a variety of genres, dividing his production time between Greece, Portugal, and the UK, with family, friends, and local stage performers becoming his regular cast and crew in exchange for holidays in the sun. I just checked my disc 6 to see the lines, and to me it looks like just something that's inherent to the print itself. Just hoping to get to the bottom of what's up with the lines to begin with, it's got me very curious because I haven't seen many transfers with an oddity quite like that. Mostly vertical but a few horizontal, it's more noticeable on some films rather than others, it's not damage so much as it is like a faint pattern overlaid overtop the entire duration of the films.

Only watched Bloodstream and Death Run so far, both of which were great fun (if you know what you're getting yourself into) and looking forward to watching more soon.

Amongst overlooked filmmakers, British director Michael J Murphy ranks as one of the most sorely neglected. If you read the 'About the restorations' chapter at the end of the booklet, I'd say this whole thing is a miracle given the materials they had to work with. Having gone over the set yet further and looking at some of the extras, I can confirm it's not any fault of the transfer that The Last Night has a choppy frame-rate. Here we carry thousands of new and used Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS, Laserdiscs, Vinyl, Collectables, Enamel Pins, Stickers, Patches and so much more. According to one of the interviews, it was shot on a wind-up camera, Murphy describes it as 'juddery' and with terrible sound, which both match the film as presented on the BD.

This set is a godsend for fans of his, but it's true that he is a very obscure character in the community. Perused a few films, and the transfers look good asides from one big issue: for some reason there are visible lines across the screen on the video? This, and the lack of any considered archival strategy, means that the physical condition of each unique reel of his filmed works has been compromised.

Having cut his teeth on a variety of homemade 8mm shorts, he had completed three feature-length productions by the age of eighteen. Boasting all-new 2K restorations from archival 16mm and 8mm elements, as well as a number of new digital captures from Murphy’s personal tape masters, this extensive retrospective of the obsessive auteur’s work is bolstered by a wealth of bonus features, including surviving fragments from lost films, and a 120-page book, all of which provides the definitive account of the weird and wonderful worlds of Britain’s great unheralded DIY filmmaker. Fitfully available on videotape, and barely represented on DVD, this comprehensive and long-gestating ten-disc Blu-ray collection seeks to rectify that situation once and for all. Weird that if they'd put out one of these for a tenner I'd have no interest, but put them all in a box set for seven times that and suddenly I start thinking about it. The site has excelled past all expectations with many only giving the site months and it's still going strong.

The set is absolutely stacked with films (both HD and some SD), and extras and is limited to 6,000 copies worldwide (3,000 for each territory).
