About this deal

Chapters are divided between three narrators: Rita, Sylvie, and Hera Harrington. It’s not clear for some time how these stories relate, but once they all come together, they make for a compelling narrative.

George was a massive asshole who cheated on his wife and then had the audacity to ask her to go visit that woman and his possible illegitimate child. During this same visit to Scotland, he sent her to sell his family estate out from under his sister and her husband. Not to even mention that all of his letters/telegrams are all basically just "Send me more money."a b Friedman, Alice T., Women and the Making of the Modern House, p 130, New Haven, Connecticut: Yale University Press (2006), ISBN 978-0-300-11789-9, retrieved via Google Books on August 8, 2010 It is also about race and the way it is viewed. Cecily from India, with a Hindustan ancestor, is much darker than the lighter skinned Scotts. She is viewed as other and this will play heavily at story's end, which resolves quite surprisingly, though I thought it fitting.

In 1947, Forbes magazine declared Lancaster, Ohio the epitome of the all-American town. Today it is damaged, discouraged, and fighting for its future. In Glass House , journalist Brian Alexander uses the story of one town to show how seeds sown 35 years ago have sprouted to give us Trumpism, inequality, and an eroding national cohesion.

Certainly, we don’t need total laissez faire. The bizarre idea that many supposed conservatives advance, that corporations should be free to do what they want, even monopolistic ones that use their massive power to aggressively advance left-wing goals, is just that—bizarre. It ignores that corporations, which are creatures of the state, are told all the time what they can and cannot do—but only to advance left-wing goals, like forcing small businesses to bake celebration cakes for homosexual “weddings.” The sooner this idea of keeping hands off corporate entities dies, the better. When I am in charge, corporations will work to advance, or at least not hinder, the societal goals of Foundationalism, or they will be dissolved, and regardless of that, no giant corporations at all will be allowed, following Tim Wu’s neo-Brandeisianism. According to the American Library Association, The Glass Castle was the seventeenth most banned and challenged book in the United States 2010 and 2019 [25] and the ninth most challenged book in 2012. [26] The book has been challenged due to offensive language and being sexually explicit. [26]

Thanks to NetGalley and FlatIron Books for this advanced readers copy of the The Glass House by Beatrice Colin. As already mentioned, the strengths here for me were the evocative writing style and ambiance created. Foxcote Manor, located in the Forest of Dean, very much felt like a character in its own right as did the forest itself, and in the past narrative in particular there was a strong sense of suspense created with a feeling of being watched and something sinister lurking, the tension building throughout until the climax. I really enjoyed this book, although it started a little slow for me. It took the first half of the book for me to become fully engrossed but then I was hooked. The female characters are fully fleshed out, while the male characters are there mostly as mirrors reflecting all of the ways in which Cicely and Antonia dislike themselves and each other. This book left a smile on my face at the end. I"m actually hoping it gets made into a movie, as the imagery in the book would translate beautifully.

His wife and child make a stop at his family's grand estate filled with exotic and grand plants. The book was about friendships, secrets a gone stale marriage and working to make it right again when we thought all hope was lost. Set in 1912 in beautiful Scotland, The Glass House is a poignant look into the importance of unexpected, meaningful relationships. FAQ: Is The Glass House a part of the book series? As for the other main character, Cicely, she was not as relatable to me. I thought she came across as a most erratic mother; totally nonchalant towards her daughter most of the time, interspersed with wild anxiety at odd intervals. And the daughter, Kitty, is as unchildlike as she can be! She is supposed to be 8 years old, but she comes off like a contemporary sulky teenager: sassy tongue, heavy sighs, and bored silences. She is by far, the worst depicted character in the book!
