About this deal

If this is being done purely to smooth the lawn then you can apply at 3 to 4 kilos per square metre which will give about ¼” or just over half a centimetre in depth. Obviously the dips will get more but you must not smother the grass. The rule is 75% of the leaf must be exposed. At this rate you may be able to top dress twice in spring and once in autumn if need be. The best thing about this lawn spreader from Scotts is its flexibility. You can use it with grass seed, fertiliser, and other lawn food. Although Scotts say you’re only meant to use it with specific products from specific brands, you should be fine to spread almost anything, as long as the granules are fine enough. The entire assembly, from the hopper to the gearbox to the strap, is extremely well made and very durable. This is probably the most satisfying spreader to use right now. It’s also quite easy to assemble. Lawns that have a high thatch layer and poor drainage, as well as enclosed lawns with little air movement, are the most susceptible to Fusarium. It is a common problem if the lawn has been covered in snow for a while. Snow Mould

Although other materials can be used for top dressing, compost takes the number one spot, and it’s what I always use on my lawn. Top dressing in conjunction with other lawn care maintenance procedures is not only highly beneficial, but can often save time. So, if you are planning to aerate or scarify your lawn do so prior to top dressing. As always timing is critical so only do this when growth conditions are good. Planning & Preparation for Top Dressing If you choose to top-dress your lawn manually, firstly, load your wheelbarrow with the chosen top dressing mix. This stage does require a lot of care & attention – the aim of top dressing is to improve (even out) the surface of the lawn so you need to make sure you’re creating that. If you have thin or bare areas of lawn, have scarified or just fancy adding newer grass varieties, then over seeding the lawn will be part of the operation. You should add the new grass seed after renovation and either before or after top dressing. If you have a lot of top dressing to work into the lawn perhaps seeding afterwards is best so that the seed doesn’t get moved around as you rub and level the dressing. On the other hand, if you are only top dressing lightly you could add the lawn seed first so that the dressing goes on top thereby insulating the seed somewhat from birds and rain.A high quality screened compost helps to boost poor soil through the improvement of its productive properties. Use pretty much anything that’s comfortable for you to lift and allows you to move a lot of compost.

Fortunately, other devices, like this EverGreen drop spreader, are much more simple, and are often cheaper and more durable as a result.

To top dress your lawn you’ll be spreading a thin layer of material – usually compost, loam, or sand – over your lawn. The layer spread is generally about ¼ of an inch in depth, and is used to amend and improve your lawn’s soil and improve moisture retention without interfering with the growth of existing grass. The nutrients contained in compost are released slowly, over a long period. This is different than how synthetic fertilizers work … this slow-release of nutrients prevents groundwater and waterway pollution because it reduces nutrient leaching and nutrient runoff. It’s designed to spread a thin layer of peat moss over seed, but will work well for finely screened compost as well.

Depending on which book you read some even advise mixing the top dressing and seed to save time. Unfortunately it seems to make more work with the seed going where the top dressing goes – into the dips and none on the bumps! Quantity of Top Dressing SoilTo use a peat moss spreader for top dressing, fill the rolling parcel with compost or your preferred material. Then push the barrel while walking up and down your lawn. The compost will drop out of the mesh openings evenly onto your lawn. If moss is a problem on your lawn, then you need to ensure that you take the appropriate action. A poor draining lawn, and a variety of other elements may cause lawn moss, however using a moss killer may be the way forward.

For smaller lawns, you may not need a lawn spreader. However, for most medium to large areas, spreaders are an essential tool for keeping a healthy lawn. Different types of lawn spreaderit’s a good idea to perform top-dressing in tandem with other beneficial lawn care practices, such as seeding, aerating, and de-thatching An annual aeration should form part of an integrated programme for your lawn, rather than depending solely on chemical applications. Over time the health of your lawn will certainly improve as a result of this mechanical treatment.
