About this deal

Sensing the immediate connection between Claire and Patrick, the authorities enlist her on a long con, trying to get a confession from the professor who may be a murderer. The book also features poetry by Charles Baudelaire, a French poet known for his controversial volume of poems, Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil).

Believe Me by JP Delaney, review: a fresh and cinematic crime

It's a job with different rules from the usual of being an actress, but it requires the same skills and the same process. All the teeming life of 19th century London is here in Thackeray’s masterpiece, right down to the curry houses frequented by Jos Sedley, who has gained a taste for the hot stuff as an officer in the East India Trading Company. And that extra ingredient is unquestionably provided by JP Delaney’s Believe Me, the follow-up to his highly successful The Girl Before . The beginning of this novel had me hooked and flipping pages to find out how it would play out after a quite intense beginning. His campaign has been deemed one of the very few campaigns that have had a measurable impact on the target population. This was a *insert another sports analogy for some kind of goal (I don't watch sports so I only know a few)*. They really enjoyed this fast-paced entertaining story that took them on a wild ride through a coulee passing by me and my other sister while we sat grumpily by. This is a richly satisfying slow burn of a novel that follows the lives and loves of the inhabitants of a small town in England through the years 1829–32. I read it with a lovely group, and we had so much fun discussing theories and trying to figure out the characters.

She sees this as a role that offers her the opportunity to get the much desired green card, and besides she can do this. Claire is an acting student working as a decoy for a law firm to catch men cheating; the wife of one man she was assigned to trap is murdered. although built around the same idea as the earlier one, and containing some of the same scenes, is completely different in plot, characterization, and structure. There is definitely a sociopath or two in this book so it meets that criteria for a thriller, but there it stopped for me. She is resourceful though, and uses her acting skills to lure unfaithful husbands into a sort of divorce trap (so the wives can be certain whether their husbands are cheaters). All is well until one day one of the wives shows up dead and Claire is enlisted by the authorities to get a confession out of the suspected husband. Beware reader, you may receive major whiplash from all the twists and turns, but it was precisely this aspect that kept the pages turning so quickly.

Shelley was just 18 when she wrote Frankenstein as part of a challenge with her future husband, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron, to concoct the best horror story. Is it just me who does this -who feels they’re constantly watching themselves in the movie of their own life? Using her feminine wiles and ability to read just what a certain man is looking for, she tempts married men and sees if they'll bite. P. Delaney went down too many dark passages like a runaway pinball machine bangin' every bell for effect. But it’s not what one would think in any way, Claire works for a law firm going undercover to catch cheating spouses since acting jobs are hard to come by for someone without a green card. And it’s cleverly and creatively written with Delaney interjecting scenes as if on stage during certain conversations and situations.

The storyline was bogged down by revisiting acting classes far too many times, relentless references to the questionable poetry contained within, and Claire's capabilities that caused me not to believe in Believe Me. In reality it’s a way of telling readers exactly what happens… until we’re offered a couple of different versions of the murder itself! JP Delaney’s The Perfect Wife opens with a quote from Ovid’s Metamorphoses: “When Pygmalion saw the way these women behaved, he was disgusted by the many flaws nature has instilled in the female sex, and for a long time lived as a bachelor, without a wife to share his bed. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. As an avid reader, I often find myself reading a book description and not being able to remember whether I’ve read it before.Claire loses her job, but is offered an opportunity to entrap Patrick by NYPD cop Frank Durban and Forensic Psychologist, Dr Kathryn Latham who believe Patrick is guilty of murdering his wife and 8 prostitutes that they know of in his life. We readers don’t really know what to believe, which is exactly how this type of novel should be proffered. In the thriller genre, psychological crime reigns supreme at present, but with an avalanche of new novels, something special is needed to rise above the throng. This is an entertaining and thrilling read, albeit you do have to suspend your sense of disbelief at times.
