About this deal

Starting at the very beginning, of the five films being looked at – The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Game of Death and Game of Death II – all were shot on 35mm, using the anamorphic process (whereby the widescreen picture shot – in the case of these films, at 2. Lee’s first film for the studio was The Big Boss and it proved to be a massive hit in Hong Kong, breaking all sorts of box office records, making him an instant star. He was originally meant to be the star of the film but, when Lee’s talents became apparent and the director was replaced during production, the ‘new kid on the block’ took over. All films were shot without any live sound, all dialogue and sound effects being post synched afterwards to aid in keeping the shooting costs down. As he grew up, Lee was trained in martial arts by his father, who taught him Tai-Chi, and Wong Shun-leung, a student of Master Yip (or Ip) Man, who taught him Wing Chun.

His seething ball of barely contained rage sees him permanently straddle the fine line between cocksure swagger and supreme mastery of his skills as he single handedly sets out to dismantle the Japanese dojo and the people he believes are responsible for the death of his master. image with rich, deep blacks while shadows have excellent visibility of the finer details within the darkest, murkiest corners. Despite this wringing out of his legacy, it’s a testament to Lee’s talent and charisma that he became such a massive star from largely only 4 films (his earlier work is rarely seen outside Asia). insanely charismatic, even when doing literally nothing, his fighting style favouring speed and absolute precision.Arrow has given martial arts fans holiday presents of a kind for two years running with Shawscope Volume One and Shawscope Volume Two, and Shout! Awash in a noticeably thick layer of natural grain, the video has a lovely film-like appearance and appreciable depth, sure to make fans very happy. Especially in comparison to the near pristine nature of what’s just been seen, fine detail never quite resolves at the level of the two previous films, especially in the film’s first act which looks very soft. And given that that includes EIGHTEEN versions of five films, there’s a hell of a lot to get through.

but what Arrow have done here is a monumental achievement in bringing us not just the films in the best technical quality currently possible (rights withstanding and with some truly exceptional restoration done where source material allows), but a wealth of extra material to really help us understand why Lee is so revered after barely two years of proper cinematic output.

Imported from the United Kingdom, the box also includes a 200-page hardbound book featuring production notes of the films, five insightful essays and various color photos.

Bruce Lee Remembered (1080i/60, 8 min) is an archive featurette with cast and crew interviews talking about Lee's impact on the Hong Kong film industry. Japanese Cut (4K Dolby Vision HDR, 110 min) is a version with a unique intro and outro that features Mike Remedios's song "The Way of Life" and a slightly modified English mono soundtrack. So he was then advised by a producer friend to go back to Hong Kong, where he could make a feature film that would showcase his obvious talents. Essentially, this martial arts actioner comes with a surprisingly thoughtful and poignant center, making it one of Lee's better and more memorable films. Wanting to ape not only the changing style of new Hollywood at the start of the 70s, but also the hyper kinetic and excessive stylings of the spaghetti westerns he also admired, Lee moved his film to Italy, with a film less interested in the sociopolitical issues of his first two, and more interested in flexing its visually creative muscles. Colours are similarly naturalistic, with all the key colours (black, white and the primaries) looking exactly as they should.

Black levels are on point and rich with strong shadow detailing throughout, providing the 4k transfer with appreciable dimensionality. And every time it did, I just had to watch it, laying on my stomach in front of our Zenith wood cabinet TV and be mesmerized by the kickass action, as well as hear Lee's signature "Wataah! this release brilliantly includes a huge range of audio options for fans who may have grown up with a very particular soundtrack lodged in their brains. Throw in a revenge plot against the man responsible for the death of Lee’s sister, a plethora of martial arts superstars to be (Bolo Yeung, Sammo Hung and a young Jackie Chan) ready to fall under the kick of Lee and a vibe ripped straight out of the grindhouse exploitation circuit via mainstream Hollywood (including a funky as all hell Lalo Schifrin score) and its easy to see how the film transcended popular culture to become one of the most influential action films of all time. The number of cuts, audio options and supplementals, new and old, are absolutely mind-blowing, covering hours and hours of extra material, the pinnacle of which is the epic 3hr 43min painstaking look at Game of Death which is so good, it could and should be released as a standalone feature. The rest are Blu-rays with also excellent audio and video presentations of each, four of which are bonus discs housing exhaustive featurettes and alternate versions of the aforementioned Bruceploitation movies. Alternate Mandarin Version (HD, 90 min) is the version released in Taiwan, featuring different opening credits, an alternate edit of the Dan Inosanto fight, the Ji Han-jae fight near the end and the happier ferry ending. If you find out that you really like them, invest in the set—it’s a chunk of change, but also very comprehensive. This included Golden Harvest, who took Lee’s Game of Death footage and crowbarred it into a film of the same name that shared little else with the filmmaker’s original intentions.
