It’s no secret that “serious” rum geeks have a tendency to look straight past the portfolio of Bacardi when it comes to seeking out new tasting experiences. Nor is it surprising—a massive international company (the largest privately held, American-owned spirits company, actually) known for its unaged, inoffensive flagship white rum isn’t the kind of entity that sparks crazy enthusiasm in a community full of devotees for funky, high-ester Jamaican rums or crazy flavorful, earthy rhum agricoles. In contrast, the easygoing, column distilled Spanish-style rums of Bacardi can look a little plain, which can lead to rum geeks never getting around to trying them at all. This review….its like not only reading my mind, but put those exact words on paper. I’m impressed by the way you describe this suburb rum.

All in all, I can see why these are popular in restaurants and bars—they’re sweet and approachable, they mix well, and they’re not too funky or challenging. My real takeaway from tasting this lineup is that the Reserva Ocho is a hidden gem, and one I’ll be looking for more often in the future. If you find that bottle on sale, it’s a great value that is ready to be plugged into practically any rum drink. nice review. Once the rum was in the glass and I swirled it, I noticed a light sheen of oil which dropped long slender legs down towards the rum. I will confess that I like long slender legs; it indicates a light to medium bodied rum which usually has a crisp entry and clean finish. In my Mouth 52.5/60 That was certainly the case for me, anyway—when I fell hard into aged rum in the last few years, I vaulted straight past the accessible, widely available stuff in a quest to try rum’s more intensely characterful niches. I was dimly aware that there were aged expressions from Bacardi that were fairly popular as high-value offerings in mixology settings, but I was in a rush to drink my way through more interesting locales (to me) such as Barbados and Jamaica.

I suspect what you saw online was not the Reserve but instead the super limited Bacardi Reserva Limitada. I am glad however you found enjoyment with the 8 Anos. Put the sugar in a glass and add the bitters and water. Stir together until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the Bacardi 8 Year Rum and ice and stir well (at least 30 stirs). Add both a lemon and orange zest. The care with which the rum was aged becomes apparent as soon as the bottle is opened. The aroma is gentle, inviting, and very well-balanced. As I poured the bottle into the glass, I was enticed by soft fragrances of dried plums, soft caramel, bits of vanilla, and a wonderful fine oak spiciness. Hints of baking spice drift in the air, some cinnamon and a few indications of nutmeg and allspice.The universe of rum is vast with a tremendous number of different kinds of offerings beyond the basic white rum. Bacardi 8 Year Aged Rum is a great way to begin your exploration of rum beyond the standard white rum. It maintains many of the same easy qualities while adding to the mix flavors that come from the aging process.

Very loosely we may put my scores into terms that you may be familiar with on a Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal scale as follows: It’s been a few years since I last tasted the Bacardi 8, so any comment I make regarding how the smokiness changes with temperature would be stretching my memory cells a little too much. However, if that is your experience, I certainly cannot disagree. Rum is a wonderfully complex and diverse spirit. Color can give us clues about time spent aging or the flavors that might be found within. Dark can be bold, sweet (or dry) and even smoky, gold is rich and soothing, and white is smooth, subtle and often refreshing. Hi chip, I agree with you on this one. I got 2 samples of this when I bought some bacardi white for some mojitos. Usually I never get to a lot of my samples and they ended up accumulating and was looking for disappointment as well.
