About this deal

Noise/Artifacts: There is an attractive and very subtle layer of grain intact, but so subtle that you’d almost never notice it. Definitely a must for 4K enthusiasts and maybe those who are weary of catalog titles… give this one a shot! Later on, it’s Arlis Howard and Adam Baldwin who shine as members of “Lusthog” squad, whom Joker—now a correspondent for Stars and Stripes—has been sent to cover through a series of brutal patrols during the Battle of Huế in 1968.

There’s no happy ending for poor Pyle – or for most of the characters – but his final moments are incredibly tense, aided by D’Onofrio’s incredible performance (he even gets the iconic ‘Kubrick stare’ and Abigail Mead’s eerie score. has already done an outstanding job, releasing the 4K versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining, so it's no exception that Full Metal Jacket receives the same treatment. There’s no obvious CGI or green-screen work here, with helicopters flying over the heads of actors, large numbers of extras and some terrific set-dressing with the ruined buildings littered around Vietnam. A reminder about aspect ratios: Similar to The Shining's 4K release, Full Metal Jacket is presented in 1.

During the 30-minute carryover featurette “Between Good and Evil,” you’ll discover many of the backstories to Kubrick’s war epic, including how Vincent D’Onofrio was working as a bouncer at the Hard Rock Café when stage actor friend Matthew Modine and his wife walked into the restaurant and mentioned he was preparing for a Kubrick film. WONKA — The Magical Adventure of a Young Chocolate Maker Comes Home on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on February 27th! for having released the film as a single, along with the Kubrick 3-Film 4k Collection, which also offers The Shining and 2001, for those who may not have been keeping up with new releases.Despite its relatively short running-time (the film clocks in at 116 minutes), the pacing is very methodical and precise, often lingering on characters as they react to the horrors around them. First, with the traditional image comparisons (below) and then via a 4K (2160p) slideshow video I’ve made and put on the site’s YouTube Channel (further below).

Upon graduating, one of the recruits, Joker (Modine), is thrown into the war at the height of the Tet Offensive.Other titles include a 4K remaster of Damien Chazelle's Oscar-winning Whiplash, Shout Factory's reissue of Hayao Miyazaki's staggering . The sound effects here prove to still manage to sound pretty impressive at times, making nice use of the rear channels for sounds like gunfire, tanks, helicopters, and whatnot. Warner’s Ultra HD release presents the film in native 4K, newly scanned from the original camera negative by Warner Bros. Back to the film grain, the reason you’ll see so much more of it here is that they’ve not only respectively left it but now with the high bitrates the 4K UHD Blu-ray format can run you’ll be able to see the fine grain come through so much more visibly.

The bass kicks in with some natural rumble with explosions, gun-fire, and the rock n roll soundtrack. Whether it’s the darkened locale of the training barracks’ toilets or the explosive action of the Vietnam War, the 4K treatment looks chillingly atmospheric. As such, the same sentiments in that linked review still apply here: it's a decent remix of the original one-channel track. Partly that’s because Cocks devotes a lot of his time to praise of the film, and he also gets into some bland interpretation of it.The latter half is war itself as the narrative follows one particular marine with the handle of 'Joker' (Matthew Modine). The sergeant gives a shocking speech about two previous great marine marksmen and both became assassins: Charles Whitman, the "Texas Tower Sniper" who killed 16 on the University of Texas campus in 1966, and JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. That being said, each image looks exquisite and brings out those dull green uniforms that contrast nicely with the orange-brown floor and beige walls that surround the bunk beds. The 2007 Blu-ray Disc includes additional bonus materials, which are presented in SD video quality with Dolby Digital 2.
