The Practitioner exam uses some strange terminology to describe the sections. That’s confusing to just about everyone other than PRINCE2 examiners! For clarity in this book, the eight major parts of the Practitioner paper are referred to as sections, and the ten component elements within each one, and which score a mark, are referred to as questions. This book is concerned with what can help avoid a failure, whether in IT projects where failure does tend to be measured to some degree, or in business projects where the failure goes largely unreported. But along with the method, the book goes further than just avoiding failure and gives you powerful tools that make your life easier in planning and control and help you speed the project forward. PRINCE2 actually stands for PRojects IN a Controlled Environment, but don’t worry too much about that; they had to call it something. PRINCE2 is currently on Version 2, hence PRINCE2. Small changes and developments are made from time to time and are released in new editions of the PRINCE2 manual. In PRINCE2 the stages are an extremely important control feature and the stage boundaries mark important decision points. At the end of each stage the Project Board has to decide whether to authorise the next stage and allow the project to continue, or shut the project down. The activities in the Stage Boundary process cover the work of the Project Manager in getting information ready for the Project Board so that it can make that decision. For example, the processes cover things such as getting the plan ready for the next stage and updating the Business Case to reflect the very latest information and projections of benefits. The waterfall approach is a sequential, linear project management process where you follow the same steps to complete your project. The first step is the requirement gathering stage. After that comes the design stage, implementation, testing, and delivery. This approach requires you to define your requirements before proceeding with the rest of the project. The PRINCE2 method can seem a bit fragmented at first, especially in the 2009 edition of the PRINCE2 manual which doesn’t help too much. But when you see how all the parts fit together as you read this edition of PRINCE2 For Dummies then it’ll make sense. Parts II and III of this book look at the various elements of the method, but this chapter ranges across the whole of PRINCE2 at a higher level so that you can see how it all slots together. A product description is written in simple language so everyone can understand it. It should also include details about how much money has been allocated for each activity, who will do what, and when they will do it.

Mastering Principles and Practices in PMBOK®, PRINCE2, and Scrum: Using Essential Project Management Methods to Deliver Effective and Efficient Projects (FT Press Project Management) You’ll find advice in Chapter 2 on how to structure your time in the Practitioner exam. It isn’t as simple as dividing the two and a half hours by the eight sections, because there’s project scenario information to read first. There’s the main scenario, but then some sections will have extra project information. You’ll need to allow time for reading the main scenario and then, for each section as you come to it, any additional scenario for that section. With a bit of contingency time – good risk management – that leaves you with about 15 minutes to answer each of the sections of 10 questions.
