About this deal

Enjoy your favourite movies, shows and games with the best picture quality available. The AVC-X3700H features an advanced HDMI section (7 in/3 out) with a dedicated 8K input that will support 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz video pass-through. All HDMI inputs feature 4:4:4 Pure Color sub sampling, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG), Dynamic HDR, and BT.2020 pass-through support for exceptional color, clarity and contrast. Enjoy full-rate 8K upscaling as well as HDCP 2.3 processing to play copy-protected content uninhibited. The AVC-X3700H also adopts eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) to support 3D audio formats directly from your smart TV apps to your AV amplifier. ADVANCED VIDEO CONTROLS The i/p scaler function controls the rest of the available functions. So, if you turn it off, you have the next closest mode to HDMI bypass, as all other processing (including resolution scaling, and progressive/interlaced processing) will be disabled. This is the mode I ended up choosing for the Denon AVR-X3700H. Movies and shows are one thing, but what about games? Popular games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and God of War were a visual treat and remained responsive to input. The AVR-X3700H has minimal latency, with delays being short enough to be imperceptible. In terms of audio, the AVC-X3700H retains the 11 channels of processing that were upped from seven on the last iteration of this model. There are nine power amplifier channels built-in, each feeding a claimed 180W of power per channel. That means you can set the AVC-X3700H up in a 5.2.4 or 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos configuration, or add an extra two-channel amp to make full use of the processing power with a 7.2.4 set-up.

HDCP 2.3 processing is available on all HDMI ports, letting you enjoy copy-protected content totally uninhibited. Certified by the Imaging Science Foundation, the AVC-X3700H features a full suite of video calibration controls (for use by an ISF technician), along with ISF Day and ISF Night video modes. Enjoy seamless compatibility with the latest HD and Ultra HD TVs, Blu-ray players and game consoles. BRILLIANT COLOUR – UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY, HDR10+ AND DYNAMIC HDR There is a lot of anticipation for this review as I gave its last year mode, the AVR-X3600H my best rating of any AVR tested. Alas, I reviewed that late in its design cycle so availability is very poor. Hope is that this replacement unit doesn't regress in measured performance while adding features. So let's get into that. Audyssey MultEQ XT32, Dynamic Volume, Dynamic EQ, LFC and Sub EQ HT: Delivers the ultimate equalization for your individual room including subwoofer EQ.Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with 2.4GHz/5GHz dual band support: Solid wireless network connectivity even in congested environments. A home theater receiver acts as a central hub and does away with clunky routing and cabling while providing solutions for your audio and video needs. As the baby of the 2020 Denon X-Series, the AVR-X2700H has a slightly lighter version of the Audyssey speaker calibration technology than its bigger brothers. Nonetheless, the MultEQ XT measurements need only a few small tweaks to the levels before we’re happy with the set-up. You can also switch between two sets of Audyssey measurements if you can’t quite make up your mind.

Most of our testing is done with the amp’s Pure Direct mode, which gives us the cleanest, clearest and most precise performance. The quality of its presentation here though means you can engage some of the height virtualisation software and not lose too much in the way of focus.

Our fixed speaker setup in the test room is a Procella THX system in 7.1 configuration, with a pair of ceiling-mounted Martin Logan SLM for Atmos content. A 7.1.2 setup is the starting point for the test, and I have not tested with e.g. 5.1.4 where the extra rear channels are replaced with a couple of extra ceiling channels instead. But, despite that class-leading build quality, and though these contemporary new features are the main reason home cinema amps are updated so regularly, these are far from the main selling points as far as the AVC-X3700H is concerned. All Zone TV audio: Play the audio from your TV to another zone, without losing fully discrete surround sound in the main zone. True cinephiles demand home theater receivers with a wide range of options. The ideal receiver should be capable of 8K resolution, Dolby Atmos sound, and be tweakable for the ideal audio and video experience. The Denon AVR-X3700H delivers on these goals and exceeds them. If we had to use one word to describe the sound of this receiver, it would be ‘confident’. The AVR-X2700H doesn’t try too hard to impress, as a nervously underpowered budget amp might, with huge blasts from the front pair or the subwoofer during the space dogfight in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2.

In fact, the way these technologies are implemented is really rather impressive, giving height but also a smoother wrap around of surround effects. We’d probably always go for these off, adding height channels only when we have the correct speakers, but the quality of the tech here makes it rather a matter of preference. The company was founded in 1946 as the Osaka-based Owada Radio Shop. It eventually became the Tokyo-based Onkyo Corporation we know today. I'm interested to know which Onkyo receiver did active bi-amping and how it did it - were the crossover points and driver levels fixed to work with a bundled speaker (like most speakers passive crossovers are)? Or were they switchable to work with a few different speakers in a series designed to work with it? If both were fully customizable, that'd be amazing. I doubt it though, the receiver is probably 20 years old with no DSP, so the filters are probably discrete circuits. While the X3700H has nine channels built-in, you can run anything from a standard 5.1-channel setup to an immersive 7.2.4-channel speaker configuration with two independent subwoofers, although the latter will require additional amplification. You can also run two-channel for music. People who consume a lot of films and have a lot stored on hard drives or other devices benefit the most from a media server. Functionally, a media server acts as a private streaming service on your home network, offering up films, shows, and music as you would like. It also doesn’t provide a very enticing solution for consumers who have already invested in a wireless soundbar system. Home theater receivers are more of an alternative to a soundbar, rather than a complimentary element.

Everybody will be able to make use of this amp’s 3D audio support, though – whether or not you have dedicated height speakers –which runs to Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Virtualization Technology, DTS:X, DTS Virtual:X and IMAX Enhanced. The AVENTAGE offers Alexa compatibility but only goes to 4K resolution. For future upgrades to your television or display to a potential 8K, it wouldn’t deliver the full quality of the content. However, despite this heavy focus on next-gen technologies, unfortunately, AVC-X37000H models manufactured before May 2021 contain a faulty HDMI 2.1 chip that prevents support of 4K gaming at 120Hz via the Xbox Series X. This issue affected all of Denon and Marantz's 2020 AVRs butDenon models with serial numbers that end with 70001 onwards should be bug-free, as they boast an upgraded HDMI 2.1 chip. And should you be in possession of an older model then you can get hold of Sound United's external HDMI adaptor. The Denon AVC-X3700H is an accomplished and highly capable AV receiver that can not only handle all the main object-based formats, but also has sufficient processing power and built-in amplification to deliver an engaging and exciting immersive audio experience. Whatever you’re watching this receiver has you covered with a controlled and dynamic performance. The Denon AVR-X3700H is an all in all very convincing AV amplifier with an incredibly good price-performance ratio. The equipment is very extensive and the 8K compatibility, as well as the 8K upscaling, have to be mentioned here first and foremost. Unfortunately, you have to do without Auro-3D completely. The sound is mega and the clarity is excellent. In summary, the Denon AVR-X3700H delivers 8K video, 9 power amplifiers, great 3D sound, and plenty of power, so brand lovers will not be disappointed. Build quality is another strong point of Denon receivers. They’re well-constructed and designed to last. Many models include robust metal chassis that can withstand years of use.
