About this deal

Card, paper and pens were used to depict individual characters, each with their own unique prop and inspired by the books’ original illustrations. The cover design was inspired by the Harlequin, a print that’s been synonymous with the Westwood brand since the 1980s. More recently, photographer Tim Walker – whose entire back catalogue, with its interest in eccentric characters, dreamlike scenarios, and dramatic contrasts in scale, could be read as its own kind of wonderland – retold Carroll’s tale for Pirelli’s 2018 calendar.

The designer has collaborated with publisher Vintage Books to crate the design and introduction for an anniversary edition of Alice in Wonderland, her favourite children's book. This edition is unique in that it was created by Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll's penname) as a gift for Alice Lidell in 1864 and only adapted for publication a year later. In each image shot by Annie Leibovitz, she was accompanied by a designer dressed as a character from wonderland (along with a few from the 1871 sequel Through the Looking-Glass).It's piffle, stuff and nonsense of the most unfortunate kind, but generations of fans prove it to be the most Marmite of books by holding it in esteem equal to my dismay. Tiny crockery, vintage props and sweet treats fill the table, capturing the magic and mysteries of Wonderland. It's a fantasia as opposed to a flop, a nuance and not a nonsense, and while it riffs off a young child's frustration at not being able to play chess (among other things), it is one perfect remove from the real world – via the imagination of a child (as perceived by a gent in his late 30s) into a surreal landscape, with even more bizarre characters than before.

Westwood has a well-documented history in activism, notably her recent campaigning against climate change. These designers are not alone in having been inspired by the extraordinarily imaginative world created by Carroll. In 2007 she was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards - but she was late on to the stage to collect it since she'd popped out to go to the loo. As well as lending her talents to the cover of the book, which features Westwood’s harlequin print alongside an image of Alice, the designer has also written a detailed introduction to the book, which includes an essay on her views regarding issues such as capitalism and the environment.Overall I really love this edition although it is a lot more low-key than a lot of other editions including the Barnes and Noble Leatherbound Edition (which I own).

A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party scene is created in collaboration with Vivienne Westwood’s creative team for the 150th anniversary edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.Tiny crockery, vintage props and sweet treats filled the table, capturing the magic and mysteries of Wonderland.

WWD reports that the English fashion designer, who was inspired by the tale to shape up her Fall/Winter 2012 collection, has teamed with Vintage Classics for this special gift edition of Lewis Carroll’s tale of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. Featuring daring sets, VR experiences, and a whole host of Alice-related objects from handwritten manuscripts to stage costumes, the exhibition charts Alice’s origins, reinventions and extensive cultural reach over the past 156 years.Based on drawings by Mary Blair, this version of Alice nodded to Tenniel’s original illustrations while incorporating more contemporary references.
