About this deal

On my dropper, the post is inserted further AND I was towing my son with smaller wheels (i.e. the rope was angled downward from my bike to his). As a result, I didn’t have quite enough clearance between the rope and my rear wheel. I still used the Trax relatively ok, but there were a couple of times the rope ended up rubbing my rear tire. Hauls Up To 200 Pounds…We Pushed The Limits And Broke It

We have tested the Red Original and Red CONNECT. For all ropes except for the Red CONNECT, accessories are sold separately. Another option is to repurpose old bike tubes. We found this idea on an MTBR forum thread. Writes @ benjaminj: To get a better feel for the TRAX MTB, we did a head-to-head test with the TowWhee tow rope system. While the two tow ropes are essentially identical in their purpose, we found their respective designs make them better suited for different types of riders and riding situations. The BicycleBungee is out for most people based on price alone, so that leaves us with the Tow-Whee vs the Trax MTB.I haven’t taken this tow rope fat biking on the snow while towing my wife, whom is towing a trailer with our rascal in it (like we did with the orginal Trax MTB). However, I have towed other adults and children with the fatbike and my hard tail both, uphill and it has worked out flawlessly. The TowWhee bike tow rope is an essential tool in any mountain biking parent’s arsenal. Mountain biking with your kids is a blast, but it comes with a unique set of challenges. Often times kids like riding down but aren’t quite the fan of working their way up the hill. The Trax MTB weighs a mere 170g–which is basically nothing. You’ll never notice the weight, and it won’t get in the way on your bike. Compatible With Dropper Posts…Mostly The previous Trax rope secured to the seat post with zip-ties. The new Pro has a clamped strap that runs through side mounts in three configurations: saddle rails, seatpost, or stem. I appreciated the strap design as it made it easier to switch between bikes than having the device zip tied to one bike. The durability compared to the previous iteration is a noticeable addition. I am sure I could take it to the limit if I surpass the designated load, but I’d rather keep it in good condition.

That said, if you ride with your dropper fully inserted into your seat-tube, the Trax won’t work. You need a couple of inches of post to work with to install the Trax on.Finally, the stem mounting configuration is handy for families where multiple adults plan to tow a single child. In this scenario, the device is attached to the child’s stem, and the rope loops around the nose of the adult’s saddle. Bottom Line I have created an excellent and cheap design. I bought a retractable dog leash for 40-50lbs and then cut the rope down to a little smaller length and then tied a bungee cord on the end to create a loop (taped it on to secure a little more). This loop fits around the kids top stem. The retractable unit gets zip tied underneath the adults seat and seat post. The pros: it retracts when the kid pops it off with one hand from his stem, so neither parent or child needs to stop biking to unhook. I made a few of these to have on each parents bike so who ever is close can hook up very fast. We leave the leash on the parents bike all summer and doesn’t interfere with our riding. But zip ties are cheap if anyone wants it off for adult rides. The TRAX (MTB and PRO) needs a couple of inches of non-moving seat post below the dropper portion, to which mount the unit. A few bikes in our fleet don’t have enough space to mount it there. (Like the bike on the right below.) Dropper Post Compatibility with TRAX MTB The TRAX PRO can mount to the seat post OR the saddle rails, giving you much more flexibility with potential dropper post variations. The PRO can even be mounted to the tow rider’s headset, in which case the end of the rope would be looped over the lead rider’s saddle, just like a TowWhee. TRAX PRO Mounted to Saddle and Seat Post

During our rides, we did come across one downside to the TRAX MTB. The tension on the cable allows it to be pulled out smoothly, but upon reaching the end of the cable you can sometimes feel it come to an abrupt end.The TowWhee is a bike tow rope that attaches two bikes together so that the lead bike can pull the trailing bike up hills. While most often used for kids, the TowWhee can actually be used with anyone needing a lift. With the Trax MTB, you don’t have to deal with the hassle of strorage or transport. It secures to the adult’s seatpost via several heavy duty nylon flanges (aka zip ties). These are included. While this attachment method is fine if you plan on leaving the Trax installed most of the time, I wasn’t crazy about this attachment method for our family. My husband and I often switch out towing our son, and it would be nice not to have to cut off zip-ties every time we want to swap between bikes. It’s not as stretchy as the competitors, nor is it as durable. It can tow 265 pounds, compared to 500 pounds for the TowWhee.
