About this deal

Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out is a debut novel by Ryan Love. The story opens with Arthur, Teddy’s 79-year-old grandfather, coming out to his children. Teddy has a secret of his own: he’s also gay… Ryan shares a few words below. Arthur and Teddy have always been close, and now they must navigate first loves, heartbreak, and finding their place in their community. Sometimes, I simply don't know where to start when writing a review. "Arthur and Teddy are Coming Out" is a book that makes you feel a lot of things. Don't get me wrong, I loved the book, it's just that the story is sad, but also endearing and, at the same time, it makes you wonder why some people can't accept others the way they are. Arthur And Teddy Are Coming Out is the first novel by British author, Ryan Love. Twenty-one-year-old Teddy’s first day as a trainee journalist at The Post isn’t ideal. His mother, outspoken journalist Elizabeth Marsh called in a favour to secure him the spot, and everyone seems to be aware of that, including his competition, a dishy fellow trainee called Ben. Teddy genuinely just wants to work and learn, but Ben King seems resentful. This story is perfect for you if you love queer romances and are in need of a great book that you'll finish in no time because of the writing style and story itself.

Gentle, honest and beautifully authentic’ Julietta Henderson, author of The Funny Thing about Norman Foreman year-old Arthur Edwards has had to live his whole life a lie, but he’s decided that it’s time to change that fact. He invites his family over to tell them the news… he’s gay. Can his family handle the revelation? Will his friends accept him now he’s out of the closet? This is a book firmly in the 'feel-good modern novel about someone finding themselves with a side of romance' genre, with the intergenerational element that many of these books have thrown in as well. Each chapter alternates between Arthur and Teddy's perspectives, which works well, and you get the expected range of side characters who mostly all turn out to be good people as this is meant to be a happy book (the somewhat of a villain character was very obvious from the start, as you might expect). The bond between Arthur and Teddy is something that stands out in the book, making their stories well-connected rather than two different elements.

A sweet coming out story which sensitively portrays the difficulties and the celebrations of coming out and being true to yourself’ Emma Denny, author of One Night in Hartswood The title already says it: Arthur and Teddy are coming out. Arthur is Teddy’s grandad, and after 50 years of marriage with his wife, Teddy’s grandma, he’s finally ready to tell the world he’s gay. Well, to tell his family, but soon everyone will know. Arthur’s grandson, Teddy, is also learning to embrace his sexuality. They are both beautifully written characters, both vulnerable and relatable in their own ways. You can’t help falling in love with Teddy and Arthur. The two POVs weave perfectly throughout and the supporting cast of characters (especially Oscar and Madeleine) are expertly crafted. It’s a very easy read, even though there are some difficult topics. I’ll mention the trigger warnings below if you want to know. I did notice that at times the story went really fast, and certain things are skipped, which I thought could have been a bit better. And other times, I had the feeling some parts could have been wrapped up a bit sooner. The problem I have with some things getting skipped or not getting enough explanation is that this story, even though it's feel-good, handles really serious problems. They need attention, explanation, and time in this story. So, you can say the pacing felt a bit off. The feel-good read of 2023. Perfect for fans of Mike Gayle, Beth O’Leary and Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper. Sometimes, I simply don’t know where to start when writing a review. “Arthur and Teddy are Coming Out” is a book that makes you feel a lot of things. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the book, it’s just that the story is sad, but also endearing and, at the same time, it makes you wonder why some people can’t accept others the way they are. He shows that life begins at whatever age the individual chooses; that we are responsible for our own happiness and that being old doesn’t mean that life is over.

Arthur’s grandson Teddy also has a secret… the same secret in fact. But is he ready to take the same step as his grandad, or is one bombshell in the family enough? Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out is a very sweet, somewhat predictable but always heartwarming story with an eye-catching cover about two men; elderly gentleman Arthur and his 22 year old grandson Teddy, both of whom are gay and are finding the right moment to come out and live as their true, authentic selves. It is slightly on the cheesy side, but that is exactly what the intention is. It's hard hitting and thoughtful in all the right places and then cosy and heart warming where it needs to be. It is definitely reminiscent of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain, a book which I also loved. Coming out is a unique experience for every queer person. It was an all-consuming fear that ruined my teenage years, until I told my family at 20. I was able to channel some of my own emotions into Teddy’s story, but Arthur’s allowed me the chance to think about the sacrifices older members of our community made when simply being who they are was illegal. Now Arthur has the chance to be that person. I hope Arthur and Teddy inspire people both young and old to live their best lives. It’s never too late to be you!Teddy is an insightful study of self-doubt and self-sabotage as he struggles to find the right moment to come out as gay. His habit of putting himself down and avoiding taking risks is one so many readers will recognise and it’s his development over the course of the story that is so engaging. His need for approbation from Elizabeth is heartbreaking at times. Arthur is an absolute inspiration… Despite the story being a little twee, I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it if you're looking for a comforting read that will tug at your heartstrings. While some of the characters show bigotry towards Arthur and Teddy, most show only love, support and compassion to them as they embark on a new chapter of their lives. I loved the idea of this book when I read the blurb, and I was super excited to receive an ARC of it, but I have to admit, I found it really disappointing. But don’t worry! At the end, our little nepo baby oh so magnanimously turns down the job at the newspaper so that Ben can have it! How civic-minded of him! This story is perfect for you if you love queer romances and are in need of a great book that you’ll finish in no time because of the writing style and story itself. Trigger warnings ⚠️
