About this deal

Based on my results above, it is obvious the output is limited significantly somewhere above the 96dB @ 1m output level. I haven’t confirmed with JBL if this is a built-in limiter, though, I assume it is. Multitone stimulus played at desired SPL/distance for 2 minutes; intended to represent music signal

JBL have a reputation for very detailed-sounding speakers that have, on occasion, been a hint bright, but the 306P MkIIs sound less 'toppy' than many JBLs I've reviewed, most of which have metal-domed tweeters. The use of a soft-dome tweeter here keeps the highs from sounding aggressive, then, but I was still impressed by the clarity and detail, as well as the excellent stereo imaging and usefully wide sweet spot. That slightly unusual horn flare, which I'm pretty sure is a spin-off from JBL's high-end studio monitors, seems to do the job. The use of a soft-dome tweeter keeps the highs from sounding aggressive, but I was still impressed by the clarity and detail delivered by these speakers. Process and analyze the NFS data yourself, including the Preference Score, Correct Spinorama, Directivity 2D and 3D live etc. :

The JBL 306P MkII also provides some tuning options to help deal with some of the more common issues you might encounter in your studio. As we'd expect, it's a whole other story when you high pass them so they're not trying to play deep bass. I understand the concern. However, you could ask ten different people how long they think the test should be run and you'd probably get ten different answers. However, I based my method off a few things: The same attention to detail within the audio range. A good choice for composing, mixing, and mastering.

The JBL 306P MK II once again shows what happens when you follow the science of proper sound reproduction even with strict budget. You simply get great sound. Even in hostile situation of just being thrown on my desk. Point them at your ear, plug them in and you are in business. OK, you should apply that little EQ correction but that is it. Keep in mind that Amir measured this distortion at 86dB which is fairly loud - into danger territory, even. Hopefully nobody is listening at an average near 86dB. Though we would indeed like to have plenty of headroom to push higher than 86dB for those brief dynamic peaks. The below graphics indicate how much SPL is lost or gained in the long-term as a speaker plays at the same output level for 2 minutes, in intervals. Each graphic represents a different SPL: 86dB and 96dB both at 1 meter. Flexible connectivity with balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS inputs, +4dBu / -10dBV input-sensitivity switch and adjustable volume controlThe usual hiss was there by the way and did not go away until about 2 feet when nothing was playing. The frequency response and accuracy are excellent, with an exceptional level of detail and precision that will allow you to make accurate mixing decisions. There is a noticeable dip at 1.6 kHz, impacting neutrality, but it is relatively easy to tame with some EQing. Once dialed in, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a comparably neutral monitor at this price. Thanks for the review @hardisj! It's interesting to see these again as it was I believe the first speaker Amir measured, so all his refinements weren't in place yet. As expected, the predicted in-room response and the farfield response (3.5 meter, blue) line up quite well above approximately 500Hz. There are three models in the series (plus a powered subwoofer), with the last digit of the model number indicating the size of the main driver. The 306P on test here occupies the middle of the range, incorporating a 6.5-inch mid/bass unit along with a 1-inch Neodymium tweeter. Like most modern monitors, the 306Ps are an active design with bespoke onboard power amplifiers. Each monitor is bi-amped, with both low- and high-frequency drivers powered by their own 56-watt Class D amplifier, producing a maximum continuous SPL of 98dB (110dB peak) and a frequency range of 39Hz-24kHz.

In the nearfield (~1 foot to mitigate room), the first note sounds very thin and not at all in line with the other notes. Audacity indicates all 4 notes should be at roughly the same audible level. This note - at ~ 225Hz - is right where a dip in the response indicates a possible resonance (cabinet; driver?).A major test of the 306P’s performance is to hear how well they integrate with our own monitoring system, comprising ATC SCM100A main and SCM25A midfield monitors, along with Yamaha NS10M nearfields. The JBLs perform superbly in this context, sounding naturally balanced, free from hype and insightful. In terms of scale, they sound far bigger than our NS10s and, with their widescreen soundstaging, on a par with the larger SCM 25As. With that in mind, I would easily recommend the 306Ps as the sole monitoring system in modestly sized project studios. Conclusion Output is limited by the internal DSP. From my testing, this occurs somewhere between 96dB and 102dB at 1 meter and results in significant limiting of the output signal. If one assumes 3dB of in-room gain and 6dB from adding a second speaker, this works out to be approximately a maximum volume of 105dB at 1 meter and 93dB at 4 meters, in-room for a pair. It is therefore reasonable to assume that these are not ideal for farfield, long-term high output listening and are best relegated to nearfield or midfield use for higher output levels. If listening at moderate volumes, these make a reasonable solution in terms of output levels.

Engineered to JBL Linear Spatial Reference design criteria for outstanding accuracy in any working space Scan-Speak does 28 minutes total of 1 minute on, 2 minutes off. Weighted pink noise with a crest factor of 2dB (my CF is 12dB). Link. good monitor, but have a problem with the crossover frequency at 1400hz, and have a lot off ground noise when is silent. The purpose of this test is to illustrate how much (if at all) the output changes as a speaker’s components temperature increases (i.e., voice coils, crossover components). It’s also immediately clear that the Image Control Waveguide is playing an important part in the room-filling sound, as the stereo image remains coherent without being focused into a tight, central sweet spot. The Waveguide also does a superb job, ensuring fine integration between the mid/bass and high-frequency drivers, as moving my head vertically up and down a single monitor’s front baffle reveals no phase-related issues.
