The story begins as the emperor Sundara Chola is ill and bedridden. His son Aditya Karikalan is the general of the Northern Command and lives in Kanchi. The younger son Arulmozhivarman is in Sri Lanka on a military campaign. Their sister Kundavai lives in the Chola royal household at Pazhayarai.

It is Arulmozhi who is Ponniyin Selvan. Also known as Rajaraja Cholan, Arulmozhi is called Ponniyin Selvan because he once fell into the Cauvery river, also called Ponni Nadhi, and was apparently "saved" by the river goddess. So, he became Ponniyin Selvan, meaning "son of river Ponni". Ponniyin Selvan was first serialised in the Tamil weekly Kalki and was hailed for author Kalki’s prose and vivid imagination. Director Mani Ratnam released the hit film Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 last year based on the historical fiction novel, featuring an ensemble cast. The second part of the film is all set for a release later this month. Aazhvaarkadiyan (Thirumalai Appan) is an ardent devotee of God Vishnu and spy of the minister, Anirudha Brahmarayar.

I can't stop pondering over the fact that today we have such popular novels like lord of the rings, harry potter and game of thrones and amazing on screen adaptations of these too. I imagine how grand it would be if someone got Kalki's writings on screen. Such an enchanting story entwined with real history would be a delight to see on screen!
