About this deal

The result is that Death Guard feel like a strong mid-tier faction now with some interesting options, but not a faction that is likely to dominate. If you only want anti-tank, the Helbrute with TL Lascannon and Missile Launcher is better than the Blight Hauler; longer range and you don’t need to take 3 to get the more reliable shots (although 2-3 would still be nasty). Do note however that the Helbrute dies very easily (well, relative compared to the other options) so you really want threat saturation anyways, so you’re still looking at taking at least 2 and preferably 3 of them. Also note that if you want it to do well in melee, you’ll need to pay around 160ish points for a Lascannon/Fist and get fewer shots, but you still get that tasty stratagem. For 1 point more than the Lascannon/Fist Helbrute you could get a Hellforged Contemptor with dual Butcher Cannons and put out a lot more shots albeit not as good at anti-tank. In this article, we’re joined by Don Hooson and we’ll be looking at the Death Guard, who got a significant boost from the new Armour of Contempt rule. Plague Marine w/ cleaver [38pts]: 2x Blight grenades, 2x Great plague cleaver, 2x Krak grenades, 2x Plague knife

Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands) may take longer to reach you. If you want more resilience, then the Crawler shines. The thing with the Crawler is that it seems to be in a weird spot because it has mixed weapon types which is normally a no-no; the mortar doesn’t require LOS so you want to park it behind a building or other terrain piece and bombard the enemy, but the rest of its weapons do and if you move out to take a shot, you’re hitting on 5s. Using it as a main tank still lets you target things that you don’t have LOS to, but it’s not an artillery platform like, say, a Basilisk or Griffon is where you park it in some ruins and it never moves. You want it to have clear shots to targets, and use the LOS ignoring mortar to make it so enemies can’t hide, rather than so you can hide.Following these changes, the new Death Guard will rely much more heavily on Terminators to hold objectives around the table, Plague Marines as their Troops support, and a mix of Volkite Contemptors and Myphitic Blight-Haulers as their ranged support against heavier targets while continuing to lean on the same characters they always have. If a unit from your army starts your Movement phase embarked within a TRANSPORT model, that unit can disembark in that phase. Votann are also going to be a huge pain in the ass thanks to having Void Armour, which turns off plague weapons and gives them Armour of Contempt on top of it. They’ve also got decent ways to mitigate a low movement speed with their bikes and shooting which can easily remove your daemon engines. Sisters of Battle are another matchup that is now much better for Death Guard. Repentia need to spend a CP to have a real shot at effectiveness against Death Guard and units like the Blightspawn can turn off Zealot. The challenge is that they can score a ton of VP without interacting, which means Death Guard armies need to be ready to go on the aggressive against them. With a new batch of rules updates comes the need to revisit the strategies and tactics of each faction. Today Robert “TheChirurgeon” Jones is looking at the traitor legions and how the changes to the points, dataslate, and army construction rules affect them.

Plague Marine w/ boltgun [84pts]: 4x Blight grenades, 4x Boltgun, 4x Krak grenades, 4x Plague knife Other marines are going to be a big challenge for Death Guard, particularly Salamanders, who can now prevent plague weapons from re-rolling 1s to wound. Sisters are also going to be a challenge, particularly if they’re also using the same rule, and both Thousand Sons and Grey Knights are going to give Death Guard fits, particularly lists that can’t take the Abhor the Witch secondary objective. Finally new Tyranids are also going to be an uphill battle for the faction. Essentially any faction that can still throw out a lot of mortal wounds is going to be a problem for the new Terminator-heavy meta. falls upon them like a ravenous wolf and inject toxic filth with its fangs. Despite its small size the Blight-hauler is well The Astra Militarum are going to be likewise tough, with lots of ability to screen out your untis and prevent you from smashing through to their tanks as they hit you from a distance. PBCs can help take out mortars and protect your Poxwalkers, but nothing can stop you from getting shredded by Mortal Wounds from Kasrkin.Chaos Lord • Exalted Champion • Chaos Champion • Aspiring Champion • Sorcerer Lord • Daemon Prince • Daemon Prince of Nurgle • Daemon Prince of Tzeentch • Death Guard Lord As the new meta unfolds, there are some good and bad matchups for Death Guard to consider. Games Workshop dropped its Q2 Balance Dataslate for 40k in mid-April, dramatically changing a number of key factions. Astra Miliatrum, Marines and Sisters were buffed, Harlequins, T’au, and Custodes were nerfed, and some key game rules were changed. Now with Tyranids looming on the horizon, we’re looking at several key factions and examining their place in this new emerging meta. Coming into April, the Death Guard were hurting. Once a steady upper mid-tier performer, the February points update hit them unreasonably hard, and that coupled with a rash of overpowered codex releases left them hovering below a 50% win rate. The new dataslate improves Death Guard dramatically with two changes:

Rob’s List

During the first battle round, your army (and every unit from it) is engaged in Wanton Destruction. Tri-lobe: +1 to hit if this unit contains three models, this is both for ranged and melee. It is expensive but taking a unit of three would up your damage output quite a bit and help out in the killpoint department as well. Suddenly these guys moving up with a lord of a prince are hitting on 3+ with reroll 1’s. Solid. The Rotten Constitution warlord trait is now useful again, making ignoring AP-1 and AP-2 valuable if you want to make a Daemon Prince with that trait and the Supparating Plate.
