About this deal

A few clues as to the tea: “The tea was heady, hinting of mint and cloves and something else.” Gothos stopping Kallor from drinking the tea. Nimander and his companions stumble upon Gothos in his abandoned Azath Tower, although he may be lost by his own will. His belief he had “no choice” but to then pen the poor things up in a some isolated tower (more isolation). Made a Slave: Young Harllo, after having been clubbed unconscious by Snell, finds himself sold to the mines.

Smooth transition from troubled thoughts to Salind's "He is troubled", referring to the Redeemer who stirred awake in his barrow for an unknown reason. She is with a group of pilgrims and her thoughts turn to the fact that Seerdomin, their benighted, has turned away from them. Surely they must have failed him somehow and so he was right in denying them. She thinks of the fundamental contradiction in the relationship between the Redeemer and his worshippers. The believer yields everything to his god, but this god cannot surrender anything and can never find relief. SO where is the Redeemer's reward?

Art Initiates Life: Mad Artist Kadaspala has spent the entirety of his time within Dragnipur tattooing an intricate pattern on everyone who is too weak or damaged to haul the wagon and is adding to its weight. He intends to create a god he can use to take revenge on Anomander Rake. He succeeds in bringing the Child God to life, but this crashes headlong into Anomander Rake's own plans and the Child God is absorbed by Rake as he dissipates into oblivion.

Implausible Fencing Powers: Justified, as the two duellants are among the best swordfighters the world has ever seen and Ascendants. Ardatha, (also 'Ardata'), an Elder Goddess, aka the 'Queen of Witches' / 'Queen of Spiders' (Mentioned only) [2] That line from the Captain is a pretty concise on-the-nose summation of Karsa in many way ways: “You could have lied.” And it’s implied “But you didn’t.” Bellurdan, aka 'Skullcrusher', High Mage of the Malazan Empire, mate of Nightchill (Mentioned only) [14]Another lone figure walking up from the coast. This one has grey hair, looks very old, wears a long coat of chain and walks with the purpose of the mad. Kallor thinks madness is born of an inner torment whereas he, the High King, was a man at peace in his heart. His thoughts turn to banality and the pointlessness of everything. As he walks, he deftly kills a rabbit for dinner and keeps walking.

Ax-Crazy: Amby and Jula Bole are just as creative in their use of weaponry and disregard for the safety of everyone involved as their brother Crump is. Gaz, the Serial Killer, thinks he is just doing what he wants, but is in truth slowly driven mad by Hood, so that he may continue to kill and thus sacrifice people to Hood — again serving Hood's ultimate plan. When asked about the unique and divisive tone and style of the novel, Steven Erikson stated that he had planned to write the novel with Kruppe's voice "from very early on in the series". [2] Plot [ edit ] I also like the structure indicated here—that we’ll see each of those supposedly inconsequential people as we head through the chapter alongside our main characters. Such as Doruth here, who is the “Uncle.” Nudge nudge, wink wink. Funny close to a scene fraught with some tension and heartbreak (I also love the tiny detail of Shadowthrone turning his entire throne around to watch Traveller leave).

As Karsa Orlong and Samar Dev traverse the Plain of Lamatath, they encounter Traveller. Someone, Karsa realizes, not even he can cross. Damn, Andarist turned them into killers. I hate this picture of children as the perfect killers—wreaking destruction without any remorse or morality. Anomander might have been a distant father, but we all know he would never have done this to his children, not even if he felt there was some cause for it. I think that he would rather take the burden than make children fight on his behalf. And there is Kruppe reminding us that he is the teller of this tale, and so he decides what gets told. Now the Elder is referenced as the mason—and I somehow feel that should have capitals applied. The Mason has been seen throughout the series, with that role being attributed to various characters. And now the Mason is free. I wonder what that will mean for the future. With all this death and despair, it’s a good move to turn to Pust for some humor here before things get overwhelmingly heavy. Oh, this poor High Priestess.

Fiddler, a renowned Bridgeburner, famous for his skill in the use of Moranth munitions (Mentioned only) [1]

The Captain tries to convince Karsa he is the Captain’s heir but Karsa refuses, saying he will free all the slaves and without them the Captain’s kingdom will be destroyed and all forgotten. Dying, the Captain whispers, “You could have lied.” Avab Tenitt, a man whose life was 'touched' by Hood (in his mortal form) as he walked the streets of Darujhistan (Mentioned only) [6] Ahh, perhaps Kallor will offer us up some sorely needed comic relief. Or not. Now, we’ll see some sides of Kallor in this book that may be unexpected. But I have to say this little internal scene doesn’t do much for him: Character Name and the Noun Phrase: Spoofed when Tovald Nom breaks into a nobleman's house and roots through his library because he thinks it's just for show. He's right and finds literary pearls such as Tales of Pamby Doughty and the World Inside the Trunk (with illustrations by some dead man). The Dividual: Scorch and Leff. While Scorch seems perpetually surprised by everything, Leff is more on the suspicious side, but they always act as one entity, and mostly serve as comic relief. They turn out to be surprisingly competent, however, when the need arises.
