About this deal

Gilbert Strang begins his classic text with a brief and enthusiastic explanation of the nature of linear algebra. This chapter covers amongst others the characteristic equation, diagonalization and iterative algorithms to estimate eigenvalues. It reminded me that knowledge of a subject's relevance and a desire to convey the importance of subject matter is not sufficient to make something exciting to read. The purpose is to have a forum in which general doubts about the processes of publication in the journal, experiences and other issues derived from the publication of papers are resolved.

This leads into a chapter on eigenvalues and eigenvectors that shows applications to differential equations and spotted owls (5).

Each section starts with working examples to demonstrate how tools from linear algebra can help solve problems in applied sciences. That said, this is a great textbook for non-mathematics major that finds mathematical writing style too exotic.

It gives a great insight into linear algebra and the format is such that it is not overwhelmingly theoretical. Please Read Notes: Brand New, International Softcover Edition, Printed in black and white pages, minor self wear on the cover or pages, Sale restriction may be printed on the book, but Book name, contents, and author are exactly same as Hardcover Edition. External citations are calculated by subtracting the number of self-citations from the total number of citations received by the journal’s documents. So in my opinion, it would make a great start for those who begin to learn linear algebra or want to refresh their understanding after a long time not using it. A poor condition book can still make a good reading copy but is generally not collectible unless the item is very scarce. He teaches Introduction to Linear Algebra and Computational Science and Engineering and his lectures are freely available through MIT OpenCourseWare. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. I didn’t find the explanations particularly easy to follow (compared to a book that doesn’t necessarily want to be completely rigorous everywhere), so the only appeal that might have for some is that it lists a fair amount of applications.

The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. As an undergrad student who has never learned math voluntarily before, I think this book is great for beginners. If you're interested in any of these areas, preparation with this book would not only be helpful but quite fun along the way. The book revisits those concepts throughout, ensuring you do not become overwhelmed when abstract concepts are introduced, as you progress with your learning. It was striking, though, to wonder why it was that the author of this book did not seek to inspire a certain degree of passion or creativity when it comes to the subject. Students, if MyLab is a recommended/mandatory component of the course, please ask your instructor for the correct ISBN.

I had to read “Linear Algebra and Its Applications” by David Lay for the Linear Algebra 1 class in my first semester in University. Gilbert Strang's lectures on Linear Algebra on MIT Open Courseware are excellent and I recommend them.Written by a true master of the subject and explained in a way that even non-mathematicans can understand. On the other hand one thing I really liked is that it introduced (left and right) column and null spaces early, and the relation between their dimensions and the size of the matrix. David Lay is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the International Linear Algebra Society, the Mathematical Association of America, Sigma Xi, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
