Ive never had a problem with a 50/50 water / emuksion for mist coat in the 18 years of plastering.. By the sounds of it the plaster has definitely been over worked/trowed/polished. Plaster primers I feel are just comercialised product. Waist of time in my opinion. So upto you if you want to use a plaster primer. A white wash/ mist coat is quite sufficient. It can be applied in a number of ways to product a variety of effects, from matt to glossy and even to look like natural stone or polished marble. How to Base Coat Plaster a Wall

Along with all the different materials that go into making the various types of plaster explored above, you will also notice, when shopping around for gypsum-based plaster, a number of terms relating to how they should be used.

Once done, there should be some surface fissures, but not too many and none too deep. Repeat the process a couple of times until the section is full, flat and relatively smooth. Now move to the next section and repeat until all are covered. Mixing plaster the first time is a trial and error job. Plasterers use different consistencies of plaster for different jobs and being a plasterer’s laborer is the hardest job in the world…. Bar none! The important thing to remember is to add the plaster to the water, not the water to the plaster.

Is Base Coat Plaster the Same as Skim Coat Plaster?

With your plaster mixed and ready to apply, scoop a manageable amount onto a Plasterers Hawk. Using a clean plastering trowel, divide off some of the plaster on the hawk, tilt it and scoop the plaster up onto the face of the trowel. We are going to assume that you have at least some basic experience of plastering. If you have never plastered before, it is worth practising this movement a few times before you actually start.

Once flat and level and starting to cure the next job is to them close the surface or “rub in” as it’s known.
