About this deal

edition is on the way, and with it a whole raft of changes to the factions of Warhammer 40,000. With the Munitorum Field Manual out in the wild and the Faction FAQs released, now’s a good time to start taking a look at what’s changed for all of our favourite armies. First up, Boon talks Craftworlds. Finally, sigh, the Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders. Both saw above average increases and I don’t really see a core rules change that’s going to help them out significantly – the Swooping Hawks had some niche play now and again, and may very well have a role with the GT mission set yet, but I’m dubious. As for the Warp Spiders…. they’re a far cry from the day I made a poor Tyranid player rage quit as they jumped out of LoS everytime he targeted them with his Flying Hive Tyrants all those years ago. I think you can safely pass here, and hope they get cool new models to match some cool new rules later in 9th. Heavy Support As Farseers grow older, their minds become so intertwined with the wraithbone core of their craftworld that their physical bodies slowly become ever more dormant. When the time has come they go to the Dome of Crystal Seers that exists within every craftworld and join the crystalline bodies of the Farseers that came before them.

The rest of this section is fine, but not spectacular. Foot Autarchs have some cool builds, but aren’t any cheaper than bike ones if you take a mobility option, meaning Sunstorm probably leaves them in the dust. They also have the bizarre issue, as in Eldritch Omens, where the Autarch that’s on the cover of the codex isn’t a legal build. Yriel and Illic both still do some OK things, but Yriel is a foot Autarch with no mobility tools, and Illic is too highly priced to be a draw. Finally, if you just want the cheapest relevant HQ possible in some sort of skew build (or are going hard on Wraiths), Spiritseers exist. Sensing an approaching crux of destiny, the psyker summons the certainty and confidence of ancient days. Doubt and fear are washed from their mind, and those nearby gain grim resolve from the psyker's indomitable aura. Also in Troops, and now available for Drukhari as well, are Corsair Voidreavers. Sadly, these have a special rule that they do not fill mandatory slots in detachments (unless you’re building a pure AHNRATHE detachment, which means taking Yriel, which means you’re either doing this as a weird little bolt-on in a soup list or playing Iyanden). Even without that, you get a basic unit (all sporting power swords and auto-wounds on 6s to hit, so not even un-scary) for 50pts, so if you’ve gone for a list using a Vanguard or Outrider and want some ObSec support or a RND unit they may have a role. Will of Asuryan seems pretty weak to me as Eldar have other ways to mitigate Leadership if you need it.

NinetyNine -Thought you might be interested to know Mindwar targeting a model instead of a unit is not quite moot. Oh boy, if Eldar Troops were in rough spot in 8th edition then Eldar Elites were Edgar Allen Poe face down in a gutter. The good news is that the Wraith units may fill a desperately needed spot in the Eldar line-up – durable, hard-hitting combat units. The bad news is that with 9th edition GW has finally finished what the Ynarri started and killed Biel-Tan. Overall the category saw a 22% increase, the largest of any force organization slot in the Eldar roster. We shouldn’t neglect that Shadow Spectres also reside in this role, still have significant ranged capability, and are also the most likely unit to benefit from Battle Focus changes, particularly in a Biel-Tan list. It remains to be seen how or if any changes or updates are made to them following release. Finally, Mind War is your “assassination” power. It targets an enemy character within 18″ and has both you and that player roll a die and add it the model’s Leadership, with the target suffering a mortal wound for every point by which your total exceeds theirs. Although it can only hit characters (unlike effects such as Purge Soul), Eldar have a variety of ways to manipulate Leadership values and can easily tilt the dice in their favor to snipe off a key support model or bring down a nasty combat character with ease.

Games Workshop have been trying to make a Fortification really matter for ages, and they’ve finally succeeded – the Webway Gate looks genuinely incredible, and is potentially faction-defining. The rules for it were essentially entirely previewed on WarCom, and at the 80pts price tag it costs you it’s spectacular. Awesome looking, high detail models by a russian group. I heard only good things about the quality of their models. Only disadvantage: Delivery can take 6 weeks.

Also, for anyone who read the Eldritch Omens review, it looks like some Aspect equipment got some nerfs after that went to print, with the most notable changes being that Banshee Masks only work when you charge (and don’t apply -1A), Dragon fusion guns are just d6+2 damage now and don’t boost to d6+4, and death spinners don’t auto-hit. Bear that in mind while looking at the relevant units.

Wings: Yeah so we’re going to get murdered in the comments for this, because this book is coming in as easily the most hyped single tome of the entire edition, but this honestly doesn’t feel like it’s going to dominate the metagame out of the gate, and might actually end up faintly underperforming. I have never wanted to be wrong more on a review judgment call, because this is my favourite faction, and will happily take my lumps if I’m covering all-Asuryani top fours in a month’s time, but we’ve been building a tonne of lists with this book and the vast majority feel like they’re just not quite hitting the the power level needed to contend with the current metagame. I agree the Jetbike upgrade is usually a good investment unless you are really tight for points and only plan to buff foot units. The Aeldari Farseers, revered for their unparalleled psychic prowess, possess a remarkable ability to meticulously strategize and execute plans that span vast stretches of time and space. Each of their actions, no matter how small, holds the potential to bring about monumental changes—a delicate butterfly’s wings with the force of a raging hurricane. Using suitable colors, paint the additional details on the Farseer and the Skyrunner bike. For gold accents, use Retributor Armour, and for metallic parts, use Leadbelcher. Be precise and patient when painting small details. This is a collection of 3rd party sculptors and designers for our space elves. If you know more let us know. Disclaimer: i haven't bought from any of these so I can't attest for their quality. At the start of the Fight phase, if that unit is within Engagement Range of any enemy units, it can fight first that phase. Both the Eldar standout special rules have been previewed on Warhammer Community, and both look decent.
