Standard is best suited for most content, as it’s the clearest and most focused. Amplify boosts bass and treble and opens up the sound, making it a good option for movie night, and Adaptive Sound, in our room at least, seems to split the difference. You get almost every worry line and wrinkle of Michael Douglas’s retired Dr Pym, thanks to the very able Samsung UHD processor working away at making up 75 per cent of every frame to turn the Full HD image into a 4K approximation. Even in scenes of high movement, there’s very little smearing and that’s no mean feat.

If you’ve been hunting for a fairly affordable 43-inch 4K TV, you know you’re not exactly spoiled for choice – and if you want one from a brand with a bit of recent profile and traction, your selection is narrowed down even further. Connections run to three HDMIs and one USB port. The only cutting edge gaming graphics feature the HDMIs support, though, is Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which allows the TV to switch into and out of its Game mode depending on the sort of content an ALLM-capable device is outputting. There’s no 120Hz or Variable Refresh Rate support. Once the euphoria of a screwless build has worn off, though, there’s no denying that the UE43AU7100 feels pretty entry-level in its construction. The lightweight feel and unassuming matt finish of both the feet and the screen frame alert you aggressively to the fact that the bodywork is pretty much completely plastic. Viewing scenes from Creed II, the RU7100 delivered fairly good color quality, especially bright colors. Watching a training montage set in the desert, I was pleased to see blue skies and colorful objects offered up accurate, vivid hues. Every 2019 Samsung TV will run on the same, custom-made operating system. On the surface this is just an evolution of the existing Samsung OS, but that doesn't seem a problem when you consider how fully featured and intuitive the user-experience is already. What's more, there are some neat additions, from enhanced modes for gaming, more options for the turn-your-TV-into-an-art-display Ambient mode, and the addition of iTunes Movies and its peerless selection of 4K HDR films.

The Tizen experience is made all the better with the excellent One Remote and Bixby voice control. The One Remote manages to condense all the volume, channel and navigation controls into a dinky and solid feeling format. It also works as a gesture remote for the on-screen cursor. If you press the microphone button in the corner, then you can also speak into it for Bixby to understand, and through Bixby you can search for all kinds of content, switch sources and channels and more. We slot a 4K HDR edition of Life Of Pi into our reference Blu-ray player to enjoy the colour and warmth of Ang Lee’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel. Our first impression is that Samsung has done a decent job with the Samsung UE43RU7470, focusing on a more subtle and sensible picture performance than trying to wow viewers with punchy big hits.

We were slightly disappointed with the colours of the Q900R, so hopefully Samsung has also made the Q950R closer to the Q90R in that regard. If it has, this could be an 8K set to crave.
