About this deal

The series is followed by the three standalone novels in which some minor characters from the trilogy play important roles. Best Served Cold (2009) is set in Styria, a land of warring city-states, and follows mercenary-general Monza Murcatto. After being thrown down a mountain by her employer, she sets out for revenge with a motley crew of misfits. The Heroes (2011) is set in the North seven years after the trilogy, and centres on another war between The Union and The North, culminating in the three-day battle over a ring of stones called The Heroes. And finally, Red Country (2012) is set in the Far Country about thirteen years after the original trilogy. Youthful Shy South had hoped to bury her bloody past, but she’ll not flinch from what needs doing when her brother and sister are kidnapped, with only her cowardly old step-father for company. Harker curled his lip. ‘If you say so, Superior, but they can’t be trusted, and that’s a fact. They don’t think like us.’ I’d say about 80% of my enjoyment of this book is the brilliant characters. Before They Are Hanged characters – 5/5 brother Kanedias over one of his apprentices, Bayaz. The brothers fought, and Juvens was killed. Swearing The Blade Itself was a complete character study without a lot of plot, Before They Are Hanged has a little more plotting involved but for me it was still all about the characters. I travelled with them, I worried for them, I hoped for the best even in the midst of the worst and at the end I’m left wondering how they will ever get out of the complete mess they are all in.

However, Before They Are Hangedhas a whole host of characters with multiple layers to their personalities. Glokta (everybody’s favourite) has a dark sense of humour, but he’s also incredibly intelligent and uses this to his advantage. However, there are moments of weakness and thoughts he has that show his sadness and desire not to be a cripple. Abercrombie, Joe (23 October 2020). "The Wisdom of Crowds Cover Copy - Joe Abercrombie". JoeAbercrombie.com . Retrieved 3 January 2021. Five stars it is. All round! Story, Performance, Overall! I've just re-read my review of the first book in the series, and realise how lukewarm it sounds. Clearly book one was just the warm up. Book 2 (and 3!) were outstanding. Steven Pacey brought it all to life with what must surely be an award-winning performance. Joe Abercrombie's writing is gritty, colourful, and positively alive. This is one of my favourite series. Frost seized hold of Harker by his coat and hauled him bodily through the filth towards the door. ‘Wait!’ he wailed, clutching at the door frame, ‘please! You can’t do this!’ His cries faded down the corridor. In this second book, Jezal goes from being a scared, naive young warrior who thinks winning a sword content in his hometown is enough to grow an understanding of what it really means to try and survive in the wild with the likes of Ninefingers and Collem West. The book has elements of surprise, and its only when you reach the end the that thing do not quite turn out as you expected.

Dogman, a loyal member of Logen's band, a skilled scout with sharpened teeth and an incredible sense of smell. Taken from a line of dialogue in the play Mother Courage and Her Children (1939) by German playwright Bertolt Brecht, said by a character called 'The Sergeant': "What they could do with 'round here is a good war. What else can you expect with peace running wild all over the place? You know what the trouble with peace is? No organization. And when do you get organization? In war."And Bayaz, the First of the Magi, is leading a party of bold adventurers on a perilous mission through the ruins of the past. The most hated woman in the South, the most feared man in the North, and the most selfish boy in the Union make a strange alliance, but a deadly one. They might even stand a chance of saving mankind from the Eaters. If they didn’t hate each other quite so much. I am Carlot dan Eider,’ she said, smiling easily and holding her hands out to him as though to an old friend, ‘Magister of the Guild of Spicers.’ This story has more action and violence than the first, concentrating on both the battles themselves as well as the politics behind them.

All short fiction is collected in Sharp Ends: Stories from the World of the First Law (April 2016). There are a total of 13 stories, of which five were original to the collection and eight previously published. [8] Story All fictional dates are in relation to the founding of The Union; Before the Union (BU) or After the Union (AU). The Original Trilogy story arc (with characters Logen Ninefingers, Jezal dan Luthar, Sand dan Glokta, Dogman, Collem West and Ferro Maljinn):We all hope that you will.’ She took Glokta’s elbow with an effortless confidence. ‘Please allow me to make the introductions.’ Mauthis, a representative of the banking clan Valint and Balk. A remarkably cold individual, he causes numerous problems for Glokta when he presents him with the demands of his mysterious masters. It was a bad day for men, all in all, and a good one for the ground. Always the way, after a battle. Only the ground wins.”
