Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world.

Briar Rose is a prince under a sleeping curse, who’s been waiting a hundred years for the kiss that will wake him. Families can talk about the violence in The Bone Spindle. How much is too much? Is reading it different from seeing in movies, videos, and other media?What I loved: a retelling of Sleeping Beauty with flipped gender roles. The prince needs to be rescued and the women are the heroes. I also love that the sleeping prince has magic and can project himself, which allows him to be more than a sleeping, passive character. The speed of the book was perfect. It's set up for another book to follow, and it makes sense. While Shane and Fi are working their way towards saving Briar Rose we discover that there are dark forces at play. Forces that are powerful, old and waiting for them. Fi, interested in finding any old books that can help her with her current predicament, agrees to go with. The lesbian storyline was a mid sized part of this book but the oodles of chemistry between Red and Shane made up for that and I may have spent way too much time rereading those sections while “looking for quotes for this review.” The Conclusion

Dark magic, Witch Hunters, and bad exes all stand in her way—not to mention a mysterious witch who might wind up stealing Shane’s heart, along with whatever else she’s after. Get started Close The writing is clean, well paced and perfectly executed. There is just enough detail to make the world rich and enticing. I LOVED the puzzles, locations and cool treasure hunting adventure exploits. Heads Up She’s going to need a partner. A warrior huntswoman with an axe to grind (literally), Shane couldn’t care less about curses and ancient texts. But instead of riches, the two girls find trouble. Filore is a bookish treasure hunter who is good with riddles, curses and lore. Shane is great with an axe and is trained in combat. Together they make the perfect treasure hunting duo.

Traditional, fairy-tale gender roles are reversed, so the sleeping beauty is male and his rescuers are female. All characters read as White, though there are a few brief mentions of tan or darker skin. Shane has always been attracted to women and falls in love with one in this story. Same-sex and bisexual attraction and relationships are standard in this fantasy world. Shane is desperate to save Andar—and her partner. She’s on the hunt for a weapon left by the mysterious Lord of the Butterflies, which holds the key to the Spindle Witch’s demise. Her love for Red has only fortified. But Red’s betrayal puts her in danger from a new enemy—the Spindle Witch’s executioner, the Wraith, a witch as powerful as he is cruel. Do you like new or different takes on old, familiar stories, or would you rather they stay the same? How does swapping genders change this story? Does it give you any new insights into the story itself, or what people are capable of? Can they save the prince or will the Witch Hunters stop them before they do? Who is Red and why does she warn Shane to stay away from her? And what will happen if they can wake Briar, how do they save him from a witch so powerful that no one has been able to stop her yet?
