About this deal

Ten years after the war, still headed by Winston Churchill, the British Empire becomes militaristic, anti-American and establishes prison camps in India for Chinese subjects considered disloyal. Frink has recently left his work of employment, where he made replica guns from America’s past (for those Japanese collectors), to start his own business designing and creating original jewelry. Wait a moment, one of my inner voices just told me that I did yet delete them for the sake of my peace of mind and mental sanity. The whole concept of an alternate universe is expanded upon in the chapters Dick wrote for a proposed sequel to TMITHC. Betty Kasoura seems both intelligent and sympathetic to the plight of the Americans, but doesn't take action to the extent that her husband does.

Although I found TMITHC difficult to get into, by the end I was taken by Dick’s portrait of a Japanese occupied California. an in-depth exploration of morality as it relates to empires, and whether any one side of a war is better than the other; whether it really matters who wins a war, or if we'd be wrapped up in moral complexity and evil and bigotry either way; and how and if humans can steer themselves toward the moral right, and if it really matters if it does. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan. Juliana Frink lives in Colorado, the buffer zone between the Germans on the east coast and the Japanese on the west.

The events of the book take place in 1962: in chapter 6, in reference to the killing of Joe Cinadella’s brothers in 1944, Juliana says « But it’s been — eighteen years ».Suspecting that the United States is sponsoring the anti-colonial subversion of British colonial rule in Asia, Churchill provokes a cold war for global hegemony; the geopolitical rivalry leads to an Anglo-American war won by the United Kingdom. Baynes warns his contact, a Japanese general, of the existence of Operation Dandelion, a plan of Goebbels for a Nazi sneak attack upon the Japanese Home Islands, with the goal of destroying the Empire of Japan. It was slow, and racist, and sexist, and the biases show in it probably even outside of the ways they're intended to. By 1962, governing their respective portions of the partitioned United States, Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany clash over the futures they imagine for the human race.

It is still different from our present day, but certainly more recognizable than the dystopia of The Man in the High Castle. When I opened the package and held the book, the print and the binding made me feel that it is very precious .

Campbell awards, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and between 2007 and 2009, the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. It prompted discussions about totalitarianism, propaganda, and resistance, making it relevant in a time of political uncertainty during the Cold War.
