Win or lose, if you create an engine that is running smoothly, and churning just the right number of resources you need to convert into money, you will be left with a huge sense of achievement at the end of the game. I'm happy to trumpet Everdell, in all its charm and glory, as the insurmountable favorite of my collection.
When the Production dust settles, a quick glance around the table reveals that, all of a sudden, everyone emerges from the lack of oversight with a mound of coins and little accountability as to where it came from. Every other card in the game shares this “all business” aesthetic, with five characters and five different starting factories to choose from, draft, or deal randomly.Each company card gives the player a resource(s) or allows them to convert resources in a number of ways. Thus, if the card's compensation is 2 ore, you played a value 3 disc on it, and failed to win it, you would get 6 ore.
The new effects are either one-time instantaneous effects (with the familiar lightning bolt symbol), or ongoing bonuses on a blue background. Players can bid on any card available but can never place a disc onto a card where they have already made a bid.
It’s deep enough to play during a game night with friends but light enough that our teenage kids are willing to jump in and play. The new cards are absolutely fantastic, because they’re significantly different, but also intuitive. If you want to win the game, it is imperative to know what your opponents are building, how they utilize their resources, what their potential combos are, and what Companies they need to bid on during the next Auction. My love of board games goes back to my childhood and passion for building relationships with others. The internal monologue is no less tense, examining every possible crease and fold of the strategic plan. You want to avoid running an engine that overproduces a resource that you cannot then use for something else.
