About this deal

The TalkTalk boxes are at least slightly slower in their operation. I have the fastest of the talk talks (DN372T v1) and find it only just tolerable but that is a very subjective view.

I had a spare laptop hard disk (Hitachi, 80Gb) so I followed these instructions to fit, and it kinda worked – the box was now ‘alive’, it would record the current programme if I pressed the record button, but anything I set to record failed. Maybe it was something to do with the hard disk not being ‘video’ grade, or the small size… Lastly, on the flip side, if the HDD is ok, is there anyway I can recover the recordings e.g. via PC? Alternatively, if I could get hold of another working DTR2100 cheaply, could I swap the HDDs on them and have the replacement one read the HDD from this box? If they put it into standby when not in use savagely reduces the number of programmes not recorded, and if they only tend to watch channels from the PSB multiplexes they might not even notice as some channels will still record whichever other channel is being watched or recorded. But it is definitely not ideal. The single most frustrating issue this device has is an *infrequent* syncing issue between audio and visual on recordings.Press the Power button once on the Control Panel on the top of the box. (A small amount of patience is now required) The "Enter Maintenance Mode Y/N (Y: POWER)" disappears from the BT Logo – Waking Up screen. After several seconds the screen goes blank. After several more seconds the Maintenance Mode menu finally appears. Each of the different platforms is developed by the parent channel, so there's a different look and feel to each. That's something we can live with as we're used to from using catch-up services on PC and in mobile apps. The new youview software that TalkTalk are rolling out over the next couple of months should improve at least some aspects of the slowness. And it follows that as the OS (in effect) of the device is on the mainboard it should be able to format a blank new hard drive without any problems. The problem is that your box doesn't appear to want to boot up properly even without the drive installed. So swapping the drive may not get you any further forward. I would have thought that the box would boot up without the drive but display a message that it can't find the drive rather that sit there continually attempting to detect it. It would be a pretty poor bit of software coding that didn't have a limit on how many attempts it makes to detect a drive before giving up and continue to the main screen. All youview boxes provide 5 different resets. The easiest to access is via their menus, but that will also delete all your recordings and you would also need to setup everything again.

Looking at your photos of inside the box there is a large plate on the underside – is that easy to remove? Although many boxes now offer catch-up and internet TV services, the way they're integrated into the EPG on YouView makes them more exciting. Not everything is there, as you don't get the full palette of Freeview HD broadcast channels, but the main domestic servicesare. If you've used catch-up services online, then you'll know what to expect. However, the YouView platform is still the same, so whether you have the new box or old one it won't make a difference to what you can watch. We won't dwell too much on the nuts and bolts of what YouView offers, except where needed for clarity and completeness. Had a beeping BT DTR T2100 box which wouldn’t load past the start up screen following a power off and on.For recording radio programes all youview boxes are unreliable. This is due to the youview boxes having no manual option for setting up timers. Even when I was trying to use my DTR-T2100 as my prime device I had to keep my HDR-FOX T2 fully running in parallel for radio programmes. You should be fine with the BT box, I've had one for a few years now, bought as a refurb, and it's been pretty solid. It has little scope for tweaking settings, if you like to fiddle, but it does the job.
