Pros: Adequate flavor. Tastes similar to Cookie Crisp. Stays crunchy in milk for a while. Comes in big box. That’s what I imagine I yelled decades ago when I had my first taste of Cookie Crisp Cereal. And this is what I’d like to yell now after having my first taste of Post’s Original Chips Ahoy Cereal. Altogether, it’s a rather unbalanced flavor palette that leaves me reaching for the Hershey’s Syrup to apply a manual drizzle. To use a proper processed cookie analogy: imagine a Girl Scout Trefoil that hasn’t quite transitioned into a Thanks-A-Lot. We were able to find this at Wal-Mart in Canada. Looking through online chatter, it seems like it’s only been spotted at Wal-Mart. I’m sure in the near future, it will slowly roll out to other major grocery stores as well. How much is it?
As with protein, Chips Ahoy cereal provides essentially none of the dietary fiber you should consume each day. One serving of Chip Ahoy provides less than 1 gram of dietary fiber. According to the FDA, the recommended dietary fiber intake should be around 25 grams. So, Chips Ahoy does not adequately supply fiber to your diet. First impression: don’t smell the bag before you taste the cereal. Maybe it was just my industrial-jumbo-Godzilla-family-sized box, but it emitted the musky odor of a burnt-down Famous Amos factory. However, while this cereal is the breakfast adaptation of the most beloved chocolate chip cookie, the mini-cookie in this cereal is not an exact duplicate. They are more aligned with General Mill’s Cookie Crisp cereal though they still provide a bit of the coveted taste you want from Chips Ahoy. I’m imagining the food scientist behind these mini chips proudly holding a pie chart that’s 50% milk, 49% chocolate, and 1% “the space between the words milk and chocolate.”
Making space for new favorites
Post didn’t even need to compete against General Mill’s Cookie Crisp cereal in the beginning. Post simply created a commercial informing the country that the dream of having Chips Ahoy for breakfast was now a reality. Secondly, Chips Ahoy contains several additives and preservatives, such as BHT, coloring, and artificial flavoring, which are not considered healthy.
Disclosure: I was provided a free sample by Walmart. The fact that I got it for free did not influence my review. The product labeling for Chips Ahoy does not state that the cereal is gluten-free or safe to consume by those who have gluten allergies. The main ingredient in the cereal version of Chips Ahoy is corn flour. Corn flour is gluten-free flour. The cereal also contains oat flour, which is generally considered gluten-free.The Breakdown: Less corny than Cookie Crisp, but also less chocolatey, this cereal’s shortbread sweetness is far from a recognizable chocolate chip cookie taste.
