Of course, an actual rose could not know anything about its own condition, and so the emphasis falls on the allegorical suggestion that it is love that does not recognize its own ailing state. Great illustrations but I found it off-putting that instead of titling the illustrations they were all referenced to an index at the back of the book. The poem is filled with symbolism, but there are a wide range of theories about what, exactly, the worm and rose represent.
