This book will leave you wanting more and not really getting all the answers you want, just seeing that there is some type of mentally illness with Elanor. This is a story that gets you from the beginning and have you questioning what you're reading as you're reading it. I loved it! In the end, I have learned that we cannot shun our deepest selves. Our ghosts make us who we are and who we hope to be. And like the bittersweet memories of first love, we carry these hauntings inside us, tethered irrevocably to our hearts...."There is a paranormal element to this in that Tessa knows Skylar is trying to reach her from the afterlife and tell her something. I loved this supernatural element to a contemporary story – I was curious to see the ways Skylar would (or could) communicate with the living world. Review DNF. This is unreadable to me for two reasons. The first is that author, as a new hospice nurse, is surprised when a dying patient is talking out loud to her dead sister who is apparently in the room. They are, she is told, making arrangements for her to go over to the other side. None of the other nurses seem at all surprised by this as it is a very usual occurence. The In Between is a delicious little novel about grief, love, and learning to let go. I don't support the premise of communicating with the dead, but it was still an interesting concept (one that I choose to enjoy in a more allegorical sense). Here's what you need to know about Vlahos's memoir: It's heartfelt without being woo-woo, and it's not as sad as you'd expect it to be. Vlahos walks readers through her time caring for 11 patients (names, identifying details and medical information have been changed) and her mother-in-law, who died in 2018. Her tone is gentle, refreshingly forthright and befitting of a professional who tells us what to expect from an event that has launched a thousand euphemisms.
