About this deal

Cognac D'Ussé is one of the fastest-growing Cognac brands in the market, consistently outperforming the average growth of Cognac products in the US by 30%. It's also much smoother than the entry-level products of Rémy Martin and Hennessy. However, only looking at VSOP classified Cognac, all brands are on a similar level. According to Men's Book, Casavecchia was excited for his collaboration with D'USSÉ because most cellarmasters merely continue the traditions laid down before them and maintain the "house style." However, in this instance, he was able to build a new spirit from the ground up. He intentionally made a product that is approachable but with the depth of flavor that a connoisseur could appreciate. Brandy is a very broad category comprised of all distillates made from fermented fruit juice, be it from grapes or another fruit, including apples, pears, berries, and more. Cognac is a specific category of brandy. It is made from grapes—usually ugni blanc, colombard, or folle blanche—within the Cognac region of France. The sector is renowned for its quality – and the annual Cognac Masters has garnered a reputation for quality spirits. The 2023 tasting took place at The Carriage in the Great Northern Hotel in London, where entrants were put through their paces spanning categories from price points and age statements, to single-cru expressions.

But] for us, being able to communicate the quality of the liquid, the making process, where it’s made, and what Michelwanted to achieve in terms of taste profileis something that was extremely important…probably as much as having Jay-Z on board and being a fan of the product himself.” Aging: D'Ussé XO ages for a significantly longer time, and matures 10 years in oak barrels, whereas the VSOP version only matures for precisely four and a half years. Bottle number one of D’Ussé 1969 Anniversaire Limited Edition Grande Champagne Cognac will be sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York on 13 March. The VS – Single Cru flight delivered a Gold medallist in the form of Courvoisier Cognac VS. Chambers found notes of “caramel and treacle” on the nose, followed by “pepper, raisins and woody spice” on the palate. It was a tough act to follow, but the following No Age Statement flight also had some strong medal contenders – three Gold winners, which were: Rémy Martin Tercet, which ad “decent length”; Rémy Martin Club, which delivered “luscious dried fruits”; and Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, for its “nice wood and spice towards the end”.Note: The D'Usse Cognac VSOP with Glitter Design contains the same Cognac as the D'Usse VSOP Cognac. The only difference is the Glitter design. How to serve the D'USSÉ VSOP

Nose: Spirited and aromatic. Woody and spicy notes of cinnamon and cloves mingle with fruity aromas. Prousaefs praised this flight: “A remarkable example of what Cognac has to offer as an XO. Depth, character and attention to detail across the whole category.” The spirit’s versatility shone through the medal-winning expressions Even the physicalchâteauitself plays a huge role in D’USSÉas a traditional and heritage-minded modern product. On the bottle, avisceral representation of the sourceknown simply by the double-barred cross,LeCroix de Lorraine(The Cross of Lorraine), an emblemhistorically representative of French patriotism and, more specifically, the Free French Forces during World War II.This cross in particulardenotes a theme of “courage, honor, and perseverance”—a fitting trifecta given the story behind the liquid. Additionally, the property’s proximity to the River Charente makes for an interesting and coveted physical environment for aging, giving D’USSÉCognacs (currently available inVSOP[Very Special Old Pale], and XO [Extra Old] expressions) a distinct woodiness and spice-forward flavor profile underneath delicate fruit and floral notes.VSOPis the second-highest level of Cognac aging (on the official age scale) with XO being the highest. A Master medal was also given to Jean Fillioux – Très Vieux Extra. The judges enjoyed “lovely notes of raisins and candied orange” on the nose, and “a good pinch of baking spice” on the palate. The round also produced five Gold medals. The whole process behind the 1969 Anniversaire collection reminded me why I got involved in the spirits industry in the first place – to create something that will stand the test of time. The Dussé brand takes the symbol of the Cross of Lorraine - that's probably why you might know it as the Cognac with a cross on the bottle. It represents the French emblem of courage, honor, and perseverance. They have adopted a symbol of French history for their own. The bottles from this Cognac house, therefore, looks particularly medieval, royal and rustic. The last flight of the day was Vintage – Single Cru, in which the final Master of the competition was discovered: Cognac Frapin – Millésime 1990. Five Gold medals made for a successful flight – including a Gold award for fellow rapper 50 Cent’s “fruity, elegant and vibrant” Branson Cognac VSOP Grande Champagne.

Think of the versatility,” says Marshall. “Don’t limit cognac to one time of year. Realize it works in so many different ways. That’s why we taste through different ages and expressions. Maybe use a VS for longer drinks like Highballs, and VSOP in a Sidecar. Think about cognac with food [pungent cheeses, dark chocolate, berries, oysters, and other seafood]." Try storing it in your freezer, where “it gets more viscosity, and the perception of the alcohol is lowered,” suggests Marshall—a great technique for summer. Most of all, be assured, she says, “there is a cognac for every palate." The first single barrel release offered by the house, D'USSÉ 1969 Anniversaire Limited Edition Cognac is produced from a French oak tierçon that has been aged in the Château de Cognac cellars. This 1969 Grande Champagne vintage was also produced from a single eau-de-vie, making it a rare glimpse into the history of the most prominent Cognac region. Upon being discovered in the D'USSÉ cellars, Cellar Master Michel Cassavecchia continued to let it mature, waiting for the right moment - which turned out to be the 50th birthday of D'USSÉ co-owner, the hip-hip mogul Jay-Z. After such an extended maturation, there was only enough of the liquid remaining to fill an estimated 150 to 200 diamond-shaped crystal decanters. Jay-Z decided to individually number the first 50 decanters, which were presented to his family and close friends, with only the remaining bottles for general sale. Overall: Compared to the standard VSOP, the D'Ussé XO is on another level. It's a fantastic long-aged, full-bodied Cognac with a lot of character. Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s spirits specialist, said: “We have seen an increasing rise in demand for Cognac in recent years, from the oldest and most valuable vintage Cognac sold at auction to ultra-premium brands. With a design as striking and unique as the liquid inside, this expression is sure to take centre stage in many prominent Cognac collections. How to Enjoy D'USSÉ 1969 Anniversaire Limited Edition CognacGroup two was chaired by Matt Chambers, spirits writer and co-founder of the Whisky For Everyone blog. He was accompanied by: Evan Prousaefs, bar manager at Sexy Fish; and Dr Winnie Bowman, Cape wine master, wine and spirits judge and writer. Method: Place simple syrup in a glass with 5 or 6 mint leaves and muddle. Fill the glass hallway with ice, add 1.5 parts D’USSÉ VSOP Cognac, and stir. Add more ice and remaining D’USSE. Stir again until the glass is fully frosted. Top with ice. Garnish with fresh mint. Sazerac

Much of the difference between bottles has to do with how long they are aged. Younger VS, or “very special,” cognac is blended from brandies at least two years old, while an XO cognac, or "extra-old" cognac, gets its rich depth because it must be aged at least six years. The VSOP, or “very superior old pale” cognacs, blended from four-year and older brandies, are right in the middle, with characteristics of both youth and age. Nose: The nose of this Cognac is sweet, floral, and full of fruity notes. Citrus fruit, apple, and cinnamon mingle with a hint of honey and caramel. The liquid comes from one of the oldest Cognac houses in France, Château de Cognac. It was bottled from a rare single barrel and was matured for decades in a 200-year-old cellar. The design gives an indication of the extensive history of Cognac blending knowledge at D'USSÉ, and the design is a subtle nod towards the forward-thinking element of the brand. Bottled at 40% ABV. The judges were divided into two panels, the first of which was led by Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business and chair of The Global Spirits Masters Competitions (GSMC). She was joined by: Ruchira Neotia, partner – Collectivino; and Ed Bates, founder of Distilled London.Jay-Z is now part owner of the D’USSÉ Cognac brand. Jay Z - D’USSÉ Cognac Ambassador and Part-Owner The number of top medal winners unearthed in this year’s blind-tasting competition showed how many amazing expressions there are to investigate in the Cognac category. The 2023 tasting discovered some Master-worthy bottlings
