About this deal

Sandwiched between Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea, Belize is blessed with amazing beaches, extraordinary pyramids, jaguars and grows some of the world’s finest cocoa. It is also the only English speaking country in Latin America, and achieved independence from the UK in 1981 (prior to this it was known as British Honduras). Its amazing ruins testify to an extraordinary rich civilization from 2000BC to 900AD about whom we know remarkably little. We do know that they were extremely partial to chocolate, valuing cocoa “more highly than gold”. And the decline of Mayan civilization provides a grim case study of the perils of climate change with drought, exacerbated by deforestation, increasingly blamed for their civilisation’s collapse in the 10th century. The Classic Maya built many of their temples and palaces in a stepped pyramid shape, decorating them with elaborate reliefs and inscriptions. These structures have earned the Maya their reputation as the great artists of Mesoamerica. Each year in early May, in a traditional practice called “tikin muuk,” farmers would plant their seeds in dry soil with confidence that the rains would soon follow. Things have been different lately, and the previous two years were especially tough.

Historically, a farmer would cut down and burn patches of forest large enough for his family’s crop. He would clear a plot of land, using it for planting until the soil nutrients were depleted, at which point he would move on, clear a new patch and let the forest regrow over his old land in a roughly 25-year rotational cycle. Recently, however, people here have been using the land much more extensively, to the point that sometimes they must clear more forest after just seven years. There has also been a shift toward larger, permanently market-oriented cornfields. In addition to agriculture, the Preclassic Maya also displayed more advanced cultural traits like pyramid-building, city construction and the inscribing of stone monuments. The Maya also made paper from tree bark and wrote in books made from this paper, known as codices; four of these codices are known to have survived. They are also credited with some of the earliest uses of chocolate and of rubber. Maya Life in the Rainforest The Classic Period, which began around A.D. 250, was the golden age of the Maya Empire. Classic Maya civilization grew to some 40 cities, including Tikal, Uaxactún, Copán, Bonampak, Dos Pilas, Calakmul, Palenque and Río Bec; each city held a population of between 5,000 and 50,000 people. At its peak, the Maya population may have reached 2,000,000 or as many as 10,000,000. All across town, parents of teens who showed no obvious signs of being unstable, troubled or bullied were saying to each other, “This could have been our kid.” There was a tremendous outpouring of support for Maya’s family and heightened interest in building networks of support for teens who feel isolated, both in the schools and in the broader community. If anything, in the wake of the COVID shutdowns, that sense of isolation has now become more widespread and the need for intervention greater. In the second half of the 20th century this started to change. Firstly, in 1960s the British Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) planted 300 acres of cacao to see what “could be done”. And then in the 1980s the US based Hershey Company, supported by various US development agencies, made major investments in cocoa, planting many new trees and setting up various fermentation and drying centres. However, during the late 1980s the global price of commodity cocoa fell by over 70%. Hershey’s could buy commodity cocoa cheaper elsewhere. And so pretty much overnight Hershey’s pulled out of Belize. Many farmers were bankrupted. Cocoa trees were abandoned, or even worse, ripped out and replaced by orange trees. When you ask what they do, they are ‘campesinos,’” says Proust. “And being a campesino means doing a little bit of everything.”

Even more alarming was the revelation in the text messages of what Elise describes as “the gross sexual objectification of girls,” a form of peer pressure accepted by New Paltz’s young people as “normative behavior.” “It was not only with Maya,” says Mathew. “Very callous relationships via text were exposed. Nobody would want their kid treated like this.” “Seeing your daughter called by some of these names, especially someone as sensitive as Maya — it’s too much for a 14-year-old,” says Elise. “It’s too much for anybody.” Keterbatasan Aset – Meskipun Maya Gold Trading menawarkan berbagai pilihan aset, investor tetap terbatas pada aset yang tersedia di platform ini. We were certain that it would rain between the third and 10th of May,” he says. “Even if the soil was dry, we would still plant, because we knew the rains would come.” Those days are over now. “When it’s the rainy season, it doesn’t rain. And during the dry season, now it rains,” Canul says. “Climate change is having an impact on all of us.”
