About this deal

My Final Say: Kids will adore this book. Families will have a great time together as they read through this work. Librarians will rush to add this title to their story time hour. Lovers of kid lit will totally appreciate the ADVENTURE, DRAMA, ACTION, and...COWBOYS! (See what I did there? 😁) Julius Caesar said he saw one in a forest in Germany during his conquest of Gaul, and Marco Polo said he saw one too, but that one turned out to be a rhinoceros. Disappointing. Powdered unicorn horn' was sold in pharmacies in London until 1741 as an elixir for aches, pains and ailments. Until someone worked out it was actually narwhal horn. No unicorns were harmed in the making of this elixir. Phew. The added bonus with this super fun read was...the word play and the use of exclamatory statements! It made the story that much more entertaining.

Since graduating from UWE Bristol in 1996, Fred has worked on all manner of projects, including greetings, editorial, advertising, publishing and animation - designing a series of animated spots for the BBC. He now works mostly in children's books, illustrating several titles for Usborne publishing, amongst others. The stunning new picture book by presidential inaugural poet Amanda Gorman and Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Christian Robinson So what will happen to the story, when a unicorn and pug won’t do what the author wants them to? In Unicorn NOT Wanted, we find out the answer to that through colorful illustrations and a funny, sweet story of friendship and compromise. The unicorn and his pug friend are full of life and energy, creativity and persistence. It’s a crazy story that will offer kids humor, color, and giggles. The Dukes of Nofolk have always carried a bag made from unicorn hide when performing their duty as Earl Marshal at the state opening of Parliament. For the rest of the year it is displayed in a glass case in the Barons' Hall at Arundel Castle and can only be handled with special 'magic' gloves. As a 3rd grade teacher I LOVE reading stories to my students and find their viewpoints to be incredibly honest. I was excited to read Unicorn Not Wanted to them. The kids really did love it! They thought it was especially funny when Pug told Unicorn "You go, girl." The humor is just right for 8-9 year olds! My student pointed out what the author was trying to say...it's okay to stand out!Unicorns *Not* Wanted offers a fun response to the current cultural obsession with unicorns. I really enjoyed the playful art style and the silliness of how the unicorn and pug disguised themselves in an effort to try to be included in the book. Unicorn NOT Wanted is a lively, charming book which recalls the tale of a unicorn and a pug as they continuously insert themselves into the narrator's story about the Wild West. The illustrations are bright and fun, and the humour will surely entertain young readers. Definitely, a book I would recommend. Elizabeth I was given a unicorn horn by the explorer Martin Frobisher, which he had found washed up on the shore in Northern Canada and later became part of the Crown Jewels and known as the Horn of Windsor. Some people now think it was a narwhal tusk again, but some people are stupid. Welcome to the Wild West, where there are plenty of cacti, and golden sunsets for riding off into, but NO UNICORNS! (Or pugs, for that matter.)

Such a funny picture book that DOES NOT include a unicorn and a pug. The story is lovely and entertaining. It follows a conversation between the narrator and two characters: a unicorn and a pug. They are both not allowed in the story! But will they take part in the end? And would we have another unicorn story?

Keep in touch

If you are a liar, it is said a unicorn will pierce you through the heart with its horn, which is blunter than it looks, so this would not be a particularly fun way to go.

Unicorn NOT Wanted by Fred Blunt | Waterstones

This is NOT a story about unicorns. Or pugs. It is set in the Wild West, with cowboys. But hang on a minute – who’s that? It’s a unicorn! I said no unicorns allowed. Oh, she’s crying now. OK, fine, you can have a small part. I said small… This is an anti-unicorn, unicorn story, which pokes fun at the never-ending stream of unicorn books, but then becomes what it sets out not to be... thanks to a unicorn intruder!

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers. Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own. Unicorn NOT Wanted written and illustrated by Fred Blunt is a picture book about (NOT) a unicorn and a pug trying to weave themselves into a story about the Wild Wild West where of course there are no unicorns…right?? Well unfortunately for the narrator, the (NOT) unicorn and pug make it their mission to be accepted into the story by any means/disguises necessary.
