About this deal

The whisky fades out during a finish which I found rather bland and uninteresting. There is nothing really wrong in the exit, but then again there is nothing really right about it either. The Afterburn 8/10

7 new and interesting whiskies to try on World Whisky Day

Scapa Glansa is the perfect invitation for whisky lovers to discover the Orcadian landscape. We are proud to offer this as a gentle introduction to the world of peated whiskies, and it has been a real pleasure drawing on the inspiration of the unexpected contrasts of Orkney to create Scapa Glansa …” Scapa…I only reviewed two expressions so far, both independent bottlings. The best one was definitely the Scapa 1988 from Gordon & MacPhail. Taste: Medium body with medium sweetness. Vanilla, light touch of coffee, creamy, hints of ashes. Mild ginger and white pepper. The smoke is dense but not overwhelming, allowing the other flavours to show themselves fully. It is soft and warm, making this the perfect malt for cold, winter nights.

Tasting Notes Switzerland

Scapa Glansa tries to be different with a peated profile which comes from a re-used barrel rather than from peated barley. For myself this is a very disappointing dram. My feeling as I sipped the whisky was that the producers knew that the spirit was not developed fully and decided to finish the whisky in ex-peated whisky barrels to cover over the weak spots. It really doesn’t work as the peat drawn from the barrel is more of a mild smoke that blurs but does not hide the undeveloped whisky. Now onto Scapa Glansa which also screams don’t be scared of single malt whisky! As it’s only finished in casks that previously held peated whisky, it may well be the most inoffensive smoky whisky. Bottling it at 40% ABV doesn’t help of course. The lemon zest also becomes more pronounced and is joined by some wonderfully smooth caramel, with subtle hints of oak wood. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Scapa Glansa Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky | House of Malt

The bay of Scapa Flow lies with the Orkney Mainland to the North and South Ronaldsay and Hoy to the East and West respectively. The bay is of considerable historic significance, having been a naval base for the British fleet during both World Wars. During the First World War, the Grand Fleet employed the bay as their Northern base and during the Second World War a German U-Boat entered the bay and subsequently sank the HMS Royal Oak. There’s only a handful of bottlings on the market, unless you believe all these undisclosed Orkney whiskies are from Scapa distillery. It is an interesting distillery though, with the only working Lomond (wash) still left in the Scotch whisky industry (albeit with modifications).

The caramel has depth and character and as well as interacting with the fruits it also bounces off the whiff of smoke drifting across the taste buds. a b c d e f g h i Maclean, Charles (2016).
