Alka-Seltzer XS are effervescent tablets which dissolve in water to give a sparkling solution. Theactive substances are: aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid),paracetamol, caffeine, sodium hydrogen carbonateand citric acid.
Alka-Seltzer XS contains paracetamol and so other paracetamol-containing preparations should be avoided. The maximum dose of paracetamol for adults is 4g daily. Central nervous system features including confusion, disorientation, coma and convulsions are less common in adults than in children. Aspirin can prolong labour and affectblood clotting in the mother or baby.
Label warning: Do not take anything else containing paracetamol while taking this medicine. Talk to a doctor at once if you take too much of this medicine, even if you feel well.
Following a review of the special container status of certain products, the Department of Health of Social Care (DHSC) has re-determined the following products now meet the special container criteria as set out in the Drug Tariff. This should be taken into consideration bypeople on a controlled sodium diet. Decreased blood salicylate levels may occur when aspirin is taken concomitantly with glucocorticoids. There is a risk of salicylate overdose when glucocorticoids treatment is stopped.
