About this deal

Such an amazing book. A blend of Russian Imperial history, and the adventurous spirituality of the Caucasus mountains combines to deliver an epic tale. The central characters of Paul Atreides of Dune and Imam Shamyl of The Sabers of Paradise were both introduced in similar says, including their respective timelines of the source materials:

This book was brought to my attention as an inspiration for Frank Herbert's Dune. That it most certainly is: there are kindjals, sietchs, fanatic followers, the many influences of geography, living divinity, royal families, vast empires pitted against disparate tribesmen, the honourable and the dishonourable. Even the purported subject of TSoP, Shamyl the Avar, is the obvious seed from which Duke Leto Atreides grew, though his exploits became those of Paul Atreides (who could further be said to have been embodied by Shamyl's youngest son, though the fictional creation did not share his tragic end).

The story takes place between 1834 and 1859. It details the story of an Islamic holy struggle against Russian Imperialism from the eyes of Imam Shamyl, who is also known as “The Lion of Dagestan”. She described the experience as “the book I was meant to do in my life”. This should not be surprising either, as she already had interest in these subjects from a young age, thanks to her parents. Her father would sing “ I’ll Sing Thee Songs of Araby and Tales of Far Kashmir”. The Sabres of Paradise were a British electronic music group from London. [1] They consisted of Andrew Weatherall, Jagz Kooner, and Gary Burns. [1] History [ edit ]

Apart from having an incredibly cool cover art, The Sabres Of Paradise debut album, "Sabresonic", is a wonderful acoustic experience, loaded with juicy and hypnotic melodies, club friendly beats and deep ambient soundscapes. Think of stuff like early Sensurreal and Speedy J circa the "G Spot" era, just not as great. The history she produced is a minor masterpiece, an unabashedly romantic account of a conflict that continues to inform religious and political tensions in the Caucasus to this day. (It’s no accident that Chechnya was the geographic core of Imam Shamyl’s movement, or that the Murids’ austerely militant Islamic faith recalls the theology of modern fundamentalists.) Blanch was not a professional historian, and one suspects that an academic would have produced an altogether less satisfying account of this period. The climax of The Sabres of Paradise, a tension-fraught exchange of hostages between the Russian army and the insurgents, would probably be relegated to a few dry paragraphs in an academic tome. For Blanch, it occupies an entire chapter — a magnificent account of the trade of three Georgian princesses, kidnapped in a daring Muslim raid, for Shamyl’s firstborn son, captured as a boy and raised to manhood in the court of the The Great White Czar. Similarly the inlay of the Versus remix EP from the following year features another couple of passages attributed to James Woodbourne, this time from the sequel 'Return to the Haunted Dancehall' of course! In retrospect there were clues that they were having a laugh here - one extract mentions an "Eddie Chemical" (the Chem Bros - Ed and Tom - provided one of the EP's remixes) while the other has "Vogel The Young Modernist" stating "we equate machines with funkiness" (which was actually the title of Cristian Vogel's first release on his Mosquito label). When Allah hath ordained a creature to die in a particular place, he causeth his wants to direct him to that place. — Lesley BlanchThe Lesley Blanch version was also quoted in Arabian Society in the Middle Ages: Studies From the Thousand and one Nights by Edward William Lane. Beginnings

My mother would read The Koran for breakfast in bed which she found very stimulating. My father would read Daniel Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year because he said the descriptions were so ghastly it made daily life seem so much more agreeable. I would be in my room getting ready for school and reading Carlyle’s History of the French Revolution; I had a thing about tumbrils and all that. It was not exactly a conventional household. Of course school [St Paul’s] was a letdown. — Lesley Blanch

During the Caucasian Wars of Independence of 1834-1859, the warring mountain tribes of Daghestan and Chechnya united under the charismatic leadership of Imam Shamyl – strengthened only by the desire for an independent Caucasus and their religious faith. For years Shamyl defied his enemy, the Tsar, who had taken his eldest son as a hostage to St Petersburg. Shamyl captured in turn two Georgian princesses (from the Tzarina’s entourage), a French governess, and the children, and kept them in his harem until they could be exchanged for his son.

Frank Herbert'ın 'Dune' adlı başyapıtında bu kitaptan esinlendiğini öğrenince bu kitaba başlamaya karar verdim. Umduğundan fazlasını buldum. İmam Şamil'in hayat hikayesini anlatan bir macera romanı beklerken bir İngiliz'in kaleminden bir Rus klasiği ile karşılaştım. Kafkasyalı müritler, Frank Herbert'ın Fremenlerine ilham vermişler; çetin şartların şekillendirdiği zorlu savaşçılar. Hançerlerine ("hıncal"ın uzun kama olduğunu bu kitapta öğrendim, Dune serisine "kindjal" olarak transfer edilmiş) aşk şiirleri yazan, düşmanlarına "hançerin paslansın" diye beddua eden ("May thy knife chip and shatter"), hançerin ucuyla öldürmeyi acemilik olarak görüp hançer kullanmayı bir sanat addeden acımasız müritler! This book is fantastic. You really get a sense of just how grinding the conquest of the Caucasus was (and the conflict is still going). It's quite a sad and tragic story - literally a tragedy, you know the hero is doomed, but he is compelled by his nature to never give up, thus sealing his fate. I'm surprised more people do not know of Shamyl, he comes across as one of the great leaders of history. It's very much a product of it's times, though, there's a lot of embellishment that you probably would not find in a modern history, but that's okay. Lesley Blanch’s epic account of the heroic and bloody struggles, and her vivid portrayal of the strange and magnetic rebel Imam who became a legend, is particularly relevant in light of the continuing conflict in Chechnya. The great leader and his fiercely proud warriors haunt the Russian psyche to this day.Savvy, self-possessed and talented, Blanch did what she wanted and earned a good living at a time when women were expected to stay at home and be subservient to the needs of husband and children. She was glamorous and stylish and, in her own unique way, distinctly powerful. Roberts, David (2006). British Hit Singles & Albums (19thed.). London: Guinness World Records Limited. p.478. And take the most special care that you locate Muad’Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis — Dune Ending (Spoilers) Two central figures from both of the books end up passing away. The legacy of their detail appears to be described in quite a similar way: When God hath ordained a creature to die in a particular place, He causeth that creature’s wants to direct him to that place. — Frank Herbert
