About this deal

Together the two parents showed absolutely no self-control, but dominated the household through fear and severe punishment. Providing the reader with such a first-person-insight into what life was like within the West’s family home, with chapter after chapter detailing what happened to the children, delivered in such an emotionally impactful manner; the book is not only unique in what it offers but much more of a tough read for it. Surprisingly short on content, the book is a quick read; there is so much more that can be told about the characters of the deranged pair and life growing up in the West household.

One thing I really enjoyed about reading this was the humanity of Fred and Rose which was revealed in a way that only children really can see about their parents.I understand that both Stephen and Mae were also abused by their parents in numerous ways, and while this is utterly horrendous and disgusting, it makes me wonder why they aren't more angry and broken that they have also been hurt by their own parents. Heathers story i found particularly upsetting- she tried 2 get away but so young +such bad luck having evil as parents. But the kids were expected to pull their own weight around the farm at Much Marcle in Herefordshire where they lived.

I also enjoy some contemporary fiction, literary fiction and romance with a smattering of non-fiction. One heartbreaking comment from Stephen (among many) seems to sum up the tragedy of these kids - when normal kids were being tucked up in bed by their parents, they were being "tied" to their beds. Indeed, when a man came to visit ‘Mandy’, the children would know that they would have to occupy themselves for a number of hours whilst their mother looked after the visitor. Having read another book by Mae West which was published much later, it’s clear to see how things have progressed since this was written and how things have changed for her and her family since. The book was evidently complied shortly after the death of Fred West in jail so the events are all so raw - and this shows in the interviews. Having read numerous books on this subject now; from various different view points this has an insight into their home life prior to the revelations. However, Fred and Rose married despite the baby having a different father, and in turn had their first child together – Annie Marie. It’s a chilling account of the crimes committed by Fred and Rosemary West, and a stark reminder of the cruelty that some people are capable of.

A story from the two middle children of Fred and Rosemary West, the couple arrested for a series of murders including that of their eldest daughter. This book details a story more fitting to a Hollywood horror movie or dark British drama - but it is real. However the end result, no matter what the real motivation behind the publication of the book was, is the publication of a truly unique insight into exactly what it was like behind the walls of 25 Cromwell Street.Indeed, reading about how Fred and Rose’s behaviour gradually worsened, all from the perspective of two of the children who were in their direct line of fire of their horrifying sexual games, is one of the hardest and most terrifying aspects of the book.
