She got annoyed with how perfect and stoic he was - when in fact, the exact opposite is true and her assessment above is the correct one: he's not: but he wanted to be. That said, there is certainly some great pity saying and thoughts, particularly if you lean toward a Stoic belief system. Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus (121-180 CE) was adopted by the emperor Antoninus Pius and succeeded him in 161, (as joint emperor with adoptive brother Lucius Verus). In much of this work I found that Aurelius's version of Stoicism to have much common ground with the tenants espoused in the New Testament.I've only read this book once, but it's clear to me that new revelations are likely to be revealed with each subsequent reading. With a profound understanding of human behavior, Marcus provides insights, wisdom, and practical guidance on everything from living in the world to coping with adversity to interacting with others. He always strived to become better, acutely aware of the responsibilities that lay on him and of the people's expectations, trying to meet them all.

Gives a bit more context and some of the phrasing just seemed a bit less off-putting than the other version I had read. With an Introduction that outlines Marcus’s life and career, the essentials of Stoic doctrine, the style and construction of the Meditations, and the work’s ongoing influence, this edition makes it possible to fully rediscover the thoughts of one of the most enlightened and intelligent leaders of any era. This type of view feels much more genuine from philosophers or personnages who, by their circumstances, endure hardships by living their beliefs or philosophy.Thou wilt die soon and thou are not yet simple nor free from perturbations, nor without suspicion of being hurt by external things, nor kindly disposed towards all; nor dost thou yet place wisdom only in acting justly. Now, going forward, the words of Marcus Aurelius will be forever in my mind, guiding me and showing me that there is a better path. When we objectively view the world and stop attaching labels to it, we strip away our judgments and at the same time, our unhappiness and suffering. There are valuable lessons in this, some more valuable than others depending on the person, which make me glad I read it. Considering how many people a book like this has to go through before getting published, I would imagine that it is at least passable. Additionally much of the advice that is espoused here is at the heart of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I never in a million years would believe that I have something in common with the most powerful person who lived two thousand years ago. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels lost in life and is looking to find the tools on how to best approach life's uncertainties and challenges as well as rise above their circumstances. And the last theme I noticed (not sure if it's part of Stoicism per se) was Marcus Aurelius's constant acknowledgement of the transient nature of things — even life itself.

He let the pages slip past his fingers to the fly leaf where was written with a broad carpenter’s pencil, “Sam’l Hamilton. The important thing to understand is that this book was never intended to be read by anyone other than Marcus Aurelius.
