About HARMAN We might have thought we’d close this review by advising JBL to rework the Flip now – add a few more features to keep up with the growing competition. Instead, we are left praising the sonic chops of a proposition that now offers extra durability, the option to tailor the sound plus an extra ounce of space and detail within its trademark zealous and musical presentation. In the case where the ResourceManager already has slots available from registered TaskManagers, steps (2) and (3) are skipped.
The design here should cover all existing functionality, except the “ Yarn Session ” mode. The Yarn Session mode currently behaves like a standalone cluster bootstrapped on YARN. Additionally, 60Hz is fine, but we should have a higher resolution and refresh rate on the cover screen to showcase apps and videos better. Featuring a substantial, built-in rechargeable battery, the Flip 6 is able to keep pumping out the music for up to 12 hours. Recharge time is just 2.5 hours. The ResourceManager, JobManager, TaskManager, and SlotPool need strong unit tests for the protocol. You may not want to crank either speaker all the way up, though; both suffer from distortion at high volumes, and you’ll get the best audio performance with the volume at about 50-60%. A future version of the Standalone Setup could be thought of to implement something like a “lightweight Yarn” architecture: Given that the Flip 5 is a past What Hi-Fi? Award winner, it will come as no surprise to learn that the Flip 6 is another resoundingly five-star product. The sonic upgrades in terms of clarity and breadth across the frequencies are easy to spot, and if you want more from the midrange and less from the treble, say, you can tweak it in the app. For a nominal price hike over the launch price of the Flip 5, there’s certainly more detail here, too. I would also like to see Samsung introduce more matte color options instead of the fairly glossy rear panels. This could help improve how the phone feels when in hand. The speaker's excellent IP67 rating means that it is both dust-tight and waterproof. You can technically submerge it up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, though the speaker also floats (and Bluetooth doesn't work well underwater). In any case, you don't have to worry about splashing the speaker or dunking it underwater to clean it.
That said, once you are able to get through the hoops to set up full apps on the cover screen, they run quite well. We just wish the experience was available out of the box. The JobManager’s scheduler grabs slots from the SlotPool and can thus access all currently registered slots even if the ResourceManager is down. The ResourceManager should always mark a slot as occupied before it is actually occupied at the TaskManager, thereby never trying to allocate an already used slot. The exception is an incorrect timeout and release on the ResourceManager side, which will be caught by the TaskManager rejecting a slot allocation request for an already occupied slot.
