The Pagemaster by David Kirschner | Goodreads

B.J. Ward as The Queen of Hearts: The tyrannical ruler of Wonderland who appears in the Alice in Wonderland book in the dragon's stomach. Loony Librarian: Mr. Dewey, the "loony" part of his character provided by Large Ham Christopher Lloyd. Popcultural Osmosis: The movie seems to run on this, and depends somewhat on a passing familiarity with famous literary characters like Dr. Jekyll or Captain Ahab, etc. Siskel & Ebert even felt this was a major flaw; that the film didn't convey to audiences why these characters were so great.A storm forces frightened Richard Tyler (Macaulay Culkin) inside a nearby library for shelter. Mr. Dewey (Christopher Lloyd), the librarian, sees that Richard needs an adventure and tries to give the boy a book, but all Richard wants is a phone. Before he can call his parents (Ed Begley Jr., Mel Harris), Richard slips on the floor, hits his head and passes out. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a fantasy land populated by famous literary characters. Eyepatch of Power: Adventure looks like a pirate, complete with eyepatch. There's nothing wrong with the eye under it - so when he needs to get a better look at something he just lifts it up.

Creepy Cemetery: The "Horror" section of the library is a giant graveyard with books shaped like tombstones. Public Domain Character: Tons of them. In fact, none of the worlds that Richard and the books travel through feature any literary characters that debuted in the last seventy-two years (at the time of the film's release date), which means you will definitely see Dr. Jekyll, Captain Ahab, and Long John Silver in this movie, but not Aslan, Bilbo Baggins, or James Bond. An absolute pleasure to read after being so fond of the movie. I never knew while growing up that there was a book. Finally, the plot was very original. I think it's good that hollywood is getting kids too read. This is a very good introduction to some of literature's greatest classics.Rereading it as an adult, i remembered all the bits that freaked me out (name one kid who doesn't have nightmares about Frankenstein's monster) as well as the books that i wanted to read because they were mentioned in here.

Just Eat Him: The "Alive and Whole" subtype is enacted by the dragon. It could easily incinerate Richard but prefers to do this instead. Because it's summer, I had time, and I've always wanted to read all of the books referenced in this 1994 animation classic. Strengths and weaknesses: This book had several strong points: something of a survey of multiple genres, very nicely illustrated, and a book that manages to promote reading to young readers, however, the book was admittedly somewhat derivative. Additionally, both Nimoy and Welker voiced the character Galvatron in Transformers (with Nimoy voicing him in the 1986 film, and Welker voicing him in the television series and again in Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight). Reading Is Cool" Aesop: They certainly tried to do this, but as many people pointed out, it doesn't really encourage reading, instead name-dropping a few literary classics and using loose approximations of their plots and characters for action scenes.Glamour Failure: The Anthropomorphic Personification of a Horror book is seen through a vial of mysterious liquid for a few frames of Beautiful All Along. Some stories have been retold so many times by different authors, or have such obscure origins, that attempting to pinpoint a specific author is a bit silly (e.g. Mother Goose, Aladdin, etc.). So forgive me if I don't happen to list the "difinitive" or "best" version. The exception are those Hans Christian Anderson or Brothers Grimm stories which are decidedly the reference point for most Westerners. I will not speak of Disney. All of the stories in this book are awesome and I loved the way it was written. I love the character Horror :) Macaulay Culkin as Richard Tyler, a young 10-year-old boy who seems to have a fear of everything and runs his life based on safety statistics. Culkin is the only actor in the film to portray his character in both live-action and animation. Everything Trying to Kill You: In the beginning of the movie, Richard has one of the most death-defying bike rides ever, encountering heavy rain, harsh winds, exploding street lamps and falling trees. Of course the scene is from his point of view, meaning it all seems terrifying to him. Played straighter when he enters the Library, where everything is trying to kill him.

The main character is someone you can really root for. He's a nerd and a coward, but he has a lot of potential too be something more. You'll be rooting for him the whole way. Whoopi Goldberg as Fantasy: A fairy-styled lavender fairy tale book. She can be opprobrious, aggressive, and hotheaded. Adventure inspects several books including The Mysterious Island and Kidnapped before spotting 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and summoning the giant squid to help Richard get over his phobia of heights. Ed Begley Jr. and Mel Harris as Alan and Claire Tyler: Richard's supportive parents. Alan considers himself a bad father due to his continuous failed attempts to help Richard get over his fears.

Fantasy Helmet Enforcement: Inverted. When Richard first sets off on his bike he has a ludicrous amount of safety gear, but loses it by the end of the film as another nod to his character development of growing past his neuroses. One of the books we see near the phone booth pile is The Snow Queen, later known for a more famous adaptation. I'm Not Afraid of You: Averted. Richard in the dragon's clutches, stares down his nemesis declaring he's not scared of it. The dragon doesn't care. Christopher Lloyd as Mr. Dewey, the unconventional librarian and caretaker of a seemingly abandoned library.
