About this deal

But with the Industrial Revolution, the North came into its own, and more recent days are examined in greater detail (possibly because we have greater detail) - industry, arts, sciences, until of the contributions of us folk up here simply can'd denied or dismissed. Definitely recommend reading it rather than listening to the audiobook version because personally, I found it felt like listening to a never ending dull lecture which got a bit repetitive to be honest. In that Introduction, the author promises to tell the north's story through the experiences of the region's people. I think it was a good starter to learning some of the history of Northern England but it was also frustrating for me to read. And despite the negativity with which the book ends, the North is not doomed to repeat a cycle of failing to evaluate and learn from our history.

But at other times, important figures from history are simply listed, with what made them peculiarly Northern often not explored.St Oswald and Bede shaped the spiritual and cultural landscapes of Britain and Europe, and the world was revolutionised by the inventions of Richard Arkwright and the Stephensons. Worked for almost three decades at the Financial Times, where he did many of the top writing and editing jobs, including comment and analysis editor and political editor.

A pop-history survey of Northern English identity, it was very interesting to someone who has lived in the North. This authoritative new history of place and people lays out the dramatic events that created the north - waves of migration, invasions and battles, and transformative changes wrought on European culture and the global economy. Deciding where the north starts in England is always a good question and the author does give the reader choices. Both books will draw on the Stretford-born author’s more than four decades as a journalist specialising largely in the archipelago’s regions and nations. For me, this was a true depiction of the north from bits of shameful truth, hardship, inequality, diversity and with a sprinkle of hilarity.

I love the North dearly, and it's disappointing that a book with such a promising premise is so lacking in any kind of Northern spirit. It encompasses the period when humans first established themselves on this island up to now so covers a rather broad timespan. Northerners is rigorous, digressive, discursive, always entertaining and enlightening, as full of good things as the North itself. Northerners fills a gap in the market for a book on the history that has shaped the north of England. I wish the book had decided on either a thematic approach *or* a timeline, as the chronology of events was frequently difficult to keep track of, but was otherwise a very engaging read.

The chapters covering the Middle Ages were especially draining, seeming to be one long list of battles with little to no supporting framework. I've read a decent amount of history, but this was the first time I read a history book about where I am from. Still, it’s great to see a book concentrating on northern history, as so many British history books gloss over the north and almost completely focus on the south.Northerners tells the formidable history of the North of England through the people and events that have shaped it – and the wider world – from the Ice Age to the post-Brexit era. I guess I would recommend this if you want somewhere to start with Northern History but I think books about specific regions and/or time periods would probably be better. Brian Groom is a journalist and one of the foremost experts on British regional and national affairs. It will tell the story of the relationship between the peoples of England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and other parts of the British and Irish isles. There is also a little bit too much polishing over historical events which would make for a more interesting book.
