Sofia and Alexandra both find their father’s dead body in his house, with enough evidence for the DA to be happy if one of them gets put away for the murder.

But if he uses this evidence in court, both he and his client - the dead man's widow - will be in mortal danger. As I said, I really struggled to put this one down due to the sheer investment I felt in the case - it was as if I was on the jury myself.Jag’s uncle Lucky has asked the pair to recover a family necklace he mistakenly gambled away, while Zaq’s brother, Tariq, has ended up in hospital after being beaten up by a mysterious gang. Nicci French husband-and-wife writing team responsible for some of the UK’s best psychological thrillers has created a gem of a protagonist in Tabitha, who sets out to investigate what happened herself, from prison. Book Group conclusion was it’s a easy beach type read, with some liking it a lot more than others who got fed up with the twist and turns.

Steve Eddie Flynn [Series, Audiobooks 1-5 | E-Books 1-6] by Steve

She is not only convinced that her sister murdered him, but also believes that she has not yet left the house. Darkly funny, packed with action and, for all its violence, brimming with warmth, this is a worthy successor to Anwar’s excellent debut. They are both on trial for murder; Eddie is working for Sofia, and sets to work to prove her innocence. However, as he steps back into his old life, Flynn realizes that the rules of game have changed — and that he is being played.Eddie prides himself on being to pick an innocent client and knowing what verdict the jury will bring back, but Fifty-Fifty isn’t that clearcut.

Fifty-Fifty By Steve Cavanagh |The Works

Split between the perspectives of Eddie, the lawyer working for Sofia’s sister, Alexandra, and the chilling voice of the unidentified killer, this thriller is bucketloads of creepy fun.Eddie and Kate are as suspicious as you are, and as the evidence piles up, and the bodies, I didn’t know which way to turn, to be honest.

This set up works very well until two thirds in, when you just want the book to end so you can congratulate yourself or commiserate on being astute or oblivious to who did it. Luckily for me, my mum also loves to spend her spare time reading meaning I have had a constant supply of books through the post to keep me occupied - not to mention those I had as a Christmas gift. Thriller novels, as I've said before, tend to be less about the intricate language and more focused on engaging characters and fast-paced plots. At no point during the novel was I confident in which sister would end up guilty, which kept me hooked throughout.Zaq, sharp, tough and loyal, investigates both – he’s happy to work with the police, but isn’t convinced they’re doing all they can.
