About this deal

While he ate whatever was in his plastic lunch box, I would curl up on the first-aid bed—a liberty he indulged since it was just the two of us. My appreciation of music and Western culture began to develop, one lunch hour at a time. I blush to admit that I know only a little bit about Buddhism – probably only enough to be dangerous. But as our little Bodhicatva is taken into the household of the Dalai Lama (“she must have a very close karmic connection to him”) and starts to learn, so do I by reading. She must not only agree with the principles of her new religion but also live them – no more giving into her instincts and chasing mice. The Dalai Lama understands her moment of weakness but encourages her not to give up on herself as the buddhas haven’t given up on her. It was as she was turning to leave the room that she glanced out the window, with its magnificent view of the snow-capped mountains, and noticed me for the first time. I love cats and I'm also interested in religions, so which is the best way to learn something about Buddhism if not through the cat of the Dalai Lama? The book is the story of HHC, of how she found herself to be the pet and companion to the Dalai Lama. It’s very much so a story of discovery through the teachings of the Buddhist community but largely it is the ridiculously entertaining memoirs of a cat who thinks very highly of herself, indeed. I can promise you that you will laugh out loud throughout this journey and not regret it one bit. "If we are wise, the greatest problems can lead to the greatest insights."

What a joy to spend some intimate time with the Dalai Lama glimpsed through the devoted eyes of his adventurous cat, Mousie-Tung. This charming and highly entertaining book will cheer you up and warm your heart. Curl up with The Dalai Lama’s Cat.” — Michael Carroll, author of Awake at Work and The Mindful Leader Or leaving Mousie-Tung in charge for three weeks when he visits Australia?” mused Chogyal, as the three collapsed in laughter again. There had been some talk around this time about what would happen when His Holiness left on a three-week trip to Australia and New Zealand. With this and many other travels planned, should I remain in the Dalai Lama’s quarters, or would it be better if I were found a new home? So that’s why I’ve put 3 stars. It is really a personal opinion, from someone who had not interest in what the book talked about, but still a bit open-minded to read it. THE DALAI LAMA'S CAT is an often amusing romp through the life of a this most unusual, educated and highly moral cat whose names are many and varied and range from HHC (his Holinesses cat) to Rinpoche (precious) to Snow Lion and Mouser depending on the circumstances at any given moment.

Besides, anyone with a particularly acute power of observation would recognize the feline presence in His Holiness’s life by the stray hairs and occasional whisker I make it my business to leave on his person. Should you ever have the privilege of getting very close to the Dalai Lama and scrutinizing his robes, you will almost certainly discover a fine wisp of white fur, confirming that far from living alone, he shares his inner sanctum with a cat of impeccable—if undocumented—breeding. As humans we have much greater potential, of course, “ His Holiness replied. “But the way we all want very much to stay alive, the way we cling to our particular experience of consciousness—in this way human and animal are equal.” In my own case, swaddled in a piece of maroon-colored fleece on a chair in His Holiness’s office, I was also aware of another fact—one of the greatest importance to all cats: I was in the home of a Cat Lover. The book’s main character is a little kitten that was rescued of the streets to become the Dalai Lama’s cat. The book gives great insight in what it must be like to be the cat of a famous person.

From the pause that followed, it was evident that for all his erudition, the professor had never before been presented with such a startling idea. When the Dalai Lama's inner circle is set the task of providing His Holiness with a book he can give his visitors, an unexpected volunteer stretches out her paws. The book is to summarize the four key elements of Tibetan Buddhism--and, importantly, to communicate how it feels to be in the profoundly reassuring presence of His Holiness. Who better to do this than his much-loved feline? If you’re interested in learning more about mindfulness and other Buddhist principles, this is an easily accessible way to do so. If you believe that cats have many lessons to teach us, reading this enchanting book will be a transformational experience for you. Cine dintre noi nu se desfată cu o masă delicioasă? Cine nu își dorește să doarmă într-un pat sigur și confortabil? Fie că suntem scriitori, călugări - sau pisoi fără adăpost -, toți suntem egali din aceste puncte de vedere."The purpose of Buddhism is not to convert people. It is to give them tools so they can create greater happiness. So they can be happier Catholics, happier atheists, happier Buddhists. There are many practices, and I know you are already very familiar with one of them...... It is the wonderful paradox...that the best way to achieve happiness for oneself is to give happiness to others." Take for example, the pursuit of mindfulness: maybe the most important thing I learned from this book is to be mindful of every activity you do throughout the day. Instead of thinking about what to do next, think about what you're doing in that exact moment. For someone who has anxiety issues and likes to multi-task, this is a very important lesson. The main hero is a cat, the Dalai Lama's cat, flirting, ruminating on energy and dharma, pondering psychology, quoting 'The Great Gatsby'... Oh, my! After reflecting on our conversation, the professor says he has stopped using snail bait on his roses. Instead, he now releases the snails over the garden wall.” The incident happened during one of the VIP meals occasionally hosted by the Dalai Lama. A high-powered delegation from the Vatican was visiting for lunch. Downstairs in the kitchen, Mrs. Trinci, the Dalai Lama’s VIP chef, had spared no efforts in making sure that His Holiness’s guests would be dazzled. For the past three days she had been hard at it, fussing and fretting over every last detail. Being Italian herself, it was as though she wanted to prove that whatever gastronomic heights might be scaled in the finest restaurants of Rome could be equaled, if not surpassed, here in the Himalayas.
