Anyway, I went into this fully expecting to favor one queen and not like the others- but I was surprised. I actually adored each of them - and felt really sorry for them. What I didn't expect was to get really invested in each of their stories AND all the suitors as well. Each queen has a "guy" that they are close to/favor... but things do not play out the way you'll expect them to. Shit gets cray. Discover the true story behind the queen who, though born with the gift of sight, could not foresee her swift and sudden fall from power…until it was too late. Pietyr is offering Katharine food and spending time with her in the library. He is feeding her rich foods to help her gain weight, teaching her how to carry herself in a crowd, and shows her how to kiss. Katharine seems to know Pietyr’s just training her and his affections are not real. They agree he will make her competitive with her sisters. Katharine teases him that she will win him over too. At the bonfire that night, Jules leads Joseph to her tent and wants to have sex with him, as they always planned to do on the night of Beltane. Joseph stops her and apologizes, saying he just wants to hold her. Pietyr makes Katharine promise that if anything seems out of sorts, she will run and meet him at the Breccia Domain. She asks him if he trusts Natalia. He says he does, but he still thinks things could go wrong. She promises to go to him. Bree and Elizabeth help dress Mirabella for her performance. She will be wearing very little clothing and her fire will cover the rest of her. The three girls discuss how the priestesses are acting strange, and that there is something in the air they can’t put their finger on. Madrigal is working on another low magic potion with Arsinoe. She asks Arsinoe if Jules told her she saw her with Matthew. Arsinoe didn’t know but is disgusted with Madrigal. Madrigal explains that the potion is made with water, Arsinoe’s blood, and the bear’s blood. She will have to drink it. It won’t make the bear her familiar, but it should link them. Then there's Arsinoe who I just adored. She's strong, kind, and generally just badass. She's raised by the Naturalists who have a gift for animals. Each naturalist has the power to tame one animal - and that animal becomes theirs / they can control said animal for the rest of their life. Except Arsinoe can't seem to do that. But, she has dear friends and has a great attitude anyway -- though they don't expect her to live past the ascension year either. Then she meets Billy, and ... I can't say anything else.

I was at the edge of my seat reading this! And I was going to say one of the only downsides while reading was because a friend sort of intentionally spoiled a twist for me, but then I was completely blindsided by another immediately after. Though Billy’s father expects him to foster connections with the powerful Mirabella and politically important Katharine, he develops a soft spot for Arsinoe early on. Katharine helps Natalia after the Hunt. Natalia tells her that the food she will eat at the Gave Noir will not be poisoned and to eat her fill. This way she can prove how strong she is to everyone. And even though Katharine is my favorite, I loved all three so much. And all three sisters are so beautifully morally grey, especially by the end of this story. Morally grey characters will forever by my favorites, and Kendare Blake gave me three strong, powerful, and smart ones to cry over and to root for.

She is the only one who remembers their shared six years together. many people believed her to be cold and desired to kill her sisters, however this is only a rumour. she loves her sisters, and this is evident when she tries to protect them as a young child.At Greavesdrake, Natalia informs Pietyr of the Temple’s plan to sacrifice Arsinoe and Katharine. They vow to not let it happen. Pietyr admits that he knows it would be foolish to love a queen, he has fallen in love with Katharine. He says he knows Natalia love her too, and she confirms it. I believed Three Dark Crowns was going to be an epic battle between sisters for the crown, but I’ve found that’s more the focus of the sequel, One Dark Throne. Three Dark Crowns is VERY character based and the majority of the novel is more focused on getting to know the characters, understanding the magic system and monarchy, and “setting up” the events to take place in the ascension year. I think had I known this beforehand, I would have enjoyed it more so I could appreciate the detail put into character development and political ties without waiting for a greater amount of action scenes, because those are all things I really enjoy in fantasy novels! If you like a more character-driven fantasy story with political intrigue, I feel Three Dark Crowns would be of interest to you. If you’re looking for the story of sisters competing to the death, I believe you’ll need to keep reading for book two.
